They aren't just professors...he's "distinguished" and she's one of the executives of all lawyers in the U.S. at the American Bar Association (the group that vetted all judges prior to President Bush ending their role back in 2001).

From my understanding Ayers got off because of the way that law enforcement gathered the information on him.
