D.C. bartenders favor Democrats as patrons By Michael O'Brien Posted: 08/22/08 10:22 AM [ET]
Partying Republicans in Washington will have to step it up after a recent survey of D.C.-area bartenders praised Democrats as being better tippers and talkers than their GOP counterparts.
The survey of 100 D.C.-area bartenders, conducted by Clarus Research Group for Beam Global Spirits & Wine, cast Democrats as more favorable bar patrons, as bartenders said they were better tippers, have better pick-up lines and were better at giving toasts.
Conversely, the bartenders said Republicans were more likely to order their drinks straight-up than Democrats, who were described as being more likely to order up pink (girly) drinks at the bar. Republicans, however, were slightly less likely to party later into the night, according to the survey.

it *seems* like a bigger tip when its a higher dollar figure. i go on percentage, as that’s what i’m taxed on.
type of thing a dem would do would be tip $2 on an $8 tab. pub would tip $1 on a $3 tab.
which do you think is better for the bartender in the long run?
cost efficiency is higher on well drinks. usually the first 2-3 shots off the well vodka pays for the whole bottle, and they’ll go thru 2-3 bottles a night.
premium? 7-10 shots to pay for the bottle, and they last longer.
layer?
I always worked nightclubs where we were way busy. When I finally left that I went to a country club where we had constant banquets, 300 people arriving all at once and headed for the bar. In both situations my line was always.....sorry, the blender is broke, can I make that over the rocks for you? haha worked every time.
A Republican and a demon were talking one day, and the demon said “You know, every time I tip someone, I make it a great big tip and tell them to ‘vote Democratic’”
The Republican replied “Yeah, I think I’ll try that.”
The next day, the Republican got out of a cab with a $49.50 fare. He gave the cabbie a $50 bill, and said “Keep the change, and be sure to vote Democratic.”
This is just anecdotal, but a few years ago zelig and I were having a spirited conversation with some of the bartenders at the Old Ebbitts Grill in DC... the consensus among the bartenders there was that - over the years - democRATs were FAR bigger partiers (heavy drinkers) than Republicans. Some of them rolled their eyes and laughed at the memories of Clinton Era shenanigins that apparently went on at the Old Ebbitts Grill. They didn’t mention who were the better tippers...
rotfl! i use that too! blender is always broken.. unless i want something :)
besides, frozen drinks tend to bring you the least amount of tips.
fortunately when i worked banquets it was typically catered and wine only. oh wow, lots of money there and absoloote minimal work. :)
How many Republicans ARE there in D.C.? Excluding congress critters they had to be comparing 1 repub for every 99 dems for their study.
What to do? What to do? I could either keep spending my spare time with my family: camping, fishing, hunting, going out to movies, parks, ice skating, skiing, riding motorcycles.... or I could start hanging around in bars! Yeah that’s the ticket! I’ll become a barfly! (/sarc)
Who give a flying **** what the heck people do in bars? Bars are full of idiots no matter what their politics. $5 for 25 cents worth of whiskey? LOL! Conversations with other losers with bad marriages, crappy jobs and alcohol dependency? ROTF! What a non-story.
This survey was in DC, so there's not going to be much of a difference, education and job-wise, between Republican and Democratic bar patrons, at least in the areas these guys looked at. They all have to get up the next day and work some pretty demanding jobs.
Everyone in politics in DC, whether Republican or Democrat, drinks and schmoozes heavily. Well, except for the boring fundie staffers or the stuck-up ultra-left winger do-gooders. But who wants to hang out with them?
Go to any bar in DC near the Capitol or White House and you'll see a bunch of staffers, Republican and Democrat, drinking, gossipping and flirting. That's how this town works- it runs on booze, gossip and BS.
DC is heavily Dem by population, but the people in politics who hang around here are split fairly evenly. On any given night, you're going to have as many GOP drinking events going on as Dem ones.
And there are more Republican DC residents than it might seem based on voting patterns. It's just that we're so heavily outnumbered here, we don't bother to vote. I'd say maybe 20% of DC residents are Republicans, with higher percentages in the surburbs.
If I remember correctly, 8 years ago there was a story out of DC of how they were glad the pubbies were coming into power because they were always much better tippers even though they didn’t drink as much.
Gotta get in line for that Ted Kennedy/Chris Dodd “waitress sandwich”.
What were the demographics of that group of Teachers you encountered.
Good booze doesn’t need anything. Not even ice.
Some single-malt scotch qualifies.
Really good Anejo too.
The real headline should be “Dems drink cheap booze, must be loaded with sugar to be made palatable.”
I just threw up in my mouth at the thought.
Our tax dollars at work.
