Country star (Toby Keith) praises Obama
Nashua Telegraph ^ | 8/20/08

Sen. Barack Obama is getting praise from Nashville, courtesy of one big, patriotic country star.

Toby Keith, perhaps best known to non-country audiences for his post-Sept. 11 song "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," says he's a Democrat, and was impressed by the senator from Illinois.

Keith has said in the past that the 2002 song – which included lines aimed at the Taliban like "we lit up your world like the Fourth of July" – was more patriotic than pro-war.

Asked while promoting his new movie "Beer For My Horses" about the role of patriotism in the current presidential election, Keith replied: "There's a big part of America that really believes that there is a war on terrorism, and that we need to finish up."

"So I thought it was beautiful the other day when Obama went to Afghanistan and got educated about Afghanistan and Iraq. He came back and said some really nice things.

"So as far as leadership and patriotism goes, I think it's really important that those things have to take place. And I think he's the best Democratic candidate we've had since Bill Clinton. And that's coming from a Democrat."

“Of personage he was one of the goodliest men that lived in his time, very high of stature, in manners more than a man, and proportionable in all his members unto that height: of countenance he was most amiable, courteous an benign in gesture unto all person, and specially unto strangers; seldom or never offended with anything, and of so constant a nature in himself, that I believe few can say that ever he changed his cheer for any novelty how contrary or sudden soever it were.

Prudent he was in council and forecasting; most liberal in rewarding his faithful servants, and ever unto his enemies as it behoveth a Prince to be; he was learned in all sciences, and had the gift of many tongues; he was a perfect theologian, a good philosopher, and a strong man at arms...what would you I should say of him: He was undoubtedly the rarest man that lived in his time”

~ William Thomas, writing of his contemporary Henry VIII

You support what supports you. Obama doesn't support the military. Toby then would be what some would call a hypocrite. I am not supporting anyone who doesn't understand our military or the mission upon them.

Toby needs to quit getting high with Willie and open his eyes to the real world.

Really. So now all of the Obama quotes need to come out to show what Toby believes? This is above my pay-grade and I defer.

This looks like a drive by media article... I don’t believe a word of it unless I hear it from TK himself.

This kind of shit drives me up the wall. The guy has wrote a ton of songs that praise America, traveled to war zones to entertain our troops, donated to conservative causes and he says this and none of his actions matter, he’s challenged on his patriotism.......now thats funny.

Don't go nuts, people.

If you've been paying attention, you would have known that Toby Keith, while far from being a moonbat, was never like Charlie Daniels, Ted Nugent, or Sara Evans, i.e. being on Sean Hannity's speed dial. This is a guy who recorded a song about smoking pot with Willie Nelson, who is as far left as is gets in the country community.

He was never "ours," and to my memory didn't make any Republican overtures when he had ample opportunities in the immediate aftermath of the Iraq war (which, if you remember, was popular after U.S. forces took Baghdad and yanked down that massive statue of Saddam).

From the FR thread "Toby Keith Pulls Freeper's Punch at Dixie Chicks," posted October 27, 2003 in the throes of the DixChix backlash:

Toby Keith, in an interview published in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, speaking of his public feuding with the we're-not-country-anymore group the Dixie Chicks, says the following:
But it's his feud with ''miserable person'' Maines that's earned Keith the most attention lately. ''She said my song makes country music look ignorant and you've gotta have more tact and be responsible,'' says Keith. ''They had a song called 'Earl Must Die' or something ['Goodbye Earl']. How hypocritical is that? How can you come off of a song with the message that if your husband abuses you, you're supposed to kill him and stick him in the trunk, or whatever -- I never heard it, but people told me about it -- and then call me ignorant for saying, 'Hey, you flew these planes into these buildings. We're angry about it, and we're gonna come get you'?''

Despite the F.U.T.K.-wear, Keith has no intention of lighting up Maines' world anymore. Last summer, his crew ''put up on our big screen an Internet picture somebody [concocted] of her and Saddam. The crowd went nuts. It was funny for a few nights, and then it started eating at me. I thought, You know what? I don't have that mean of a heart, to be able to kick somebody in the crotch like that. Just because she's young and spouted off, that's a little hardcore. So I put an end to it.''

Toby Keith -- the let-bygones-be-bygones, not-so-angry American? Well, maybe. But also, he adds, ''if I'm gonna do anything, it's gotta be funnier than that.'' In other words: Watch your a--, Natalie.

IMHO, Keith isn't being a weather vane; he's still where he was back then. He's in the center in Nashville, which is far to the right in Hollywood and New York.

Anybody who is stupid enough or socialist enough to openly praise Obama deserves all the grief they get and I definitely question their patriotism.
