Dear NBC Olympics Anchors: A Little Patriotism Wouldn’t Kill You
Pajamas Media ^ | August 19, 2008 | Melissa Clouthier

Sour-faced Bob Costas and Cris Collinsworth should take a lesson from the enthusiastic, America-loving Bela Karolyi.

----------------------------------------------------

Being the typical American family — 2.1 kids, house in the burbs, yappy dog — the Olympic Games have been running in the background pretty much non-stop at our house. In the evening, after work, I settle down with everyone else and watch what Bob Costas and company have for me that night.

Maybe it’s just the fact that after three days both fish and avuncular TV anchors stink, but the NBC talking heads have gotten on my last olfactory nerve.....

“They are doing everything they can, supposedly, to be upright, positive role models.”

Well good for them, then. I was not aware of all of that.

Flag waving is fine as far as it goes. However, if they REALLY want to be positive role models, especially for say, inner city youths, how about a public celebration of monogamy and the paramount importance of the stable, traditonal nuclear family. It is THE building block.

Bob Costas only knows how to make trite comments and talk down to people. Everytime I see his swarmy face, I get ill.
Everytime Mary Cirillo opens her mouth, its like she’s talking to you on a 3rd grade level. Idiotic woman on the street reports. Its on “The View” level of stupidity.
Collinsworth was about the only one worth a damn. He can pull off an interview of athletes. Atleast NBC had to sense of decency to have him interview Alicia Sacramone, rather than Bob Costas that probably would of done nothing but rub salt in her wounds.

Bob Costas was once a great sports announcer. He's outgrown that, and he's now writing checks that his brain can't cash.

It's really painful when sports guys try to cross over to the real world. Stick to sports!

As Dirty Harry would say "a man's got to know his limitations."

>>It is THE building block>>

After the foundation of faith is established for the family, THEN the blocks can be laid on top. Without it, all crumbles if the members decide they don’t like family.

Finally, in the 21st century, the Olympic Committee seems unable, in spite of satellite communications, the internet, and 500 cable channels, to organize events so anyone can find the events of his choice --- without having to watch hours of crap in the off-chance that a worthwhile event might pop up by accident --- totally unpredictably!

Oops. Meant to add, you can watch the events live or go back and watch them "on tape" as it were.

The only events you can't watch online are the so-called crown jewels --gymnastics, diving and track and field.

Otherwise, everything's here and all the countries competing are shown from start to finish, not just the Chinese, Russian and USA teams.

I throughly enjoyed the Equestrian cross-country and Archery events, neither of which were shown on TV.

The gold medal ceremony of the discus thrower was shown in the last few seconds of Monday night’s coverage.

“That’s why seeing the mens basketball team, NBAers all, display open patriotism has been so refreshing and joyful for me. I know the cynical will say it’s just a show, but I don’t think it is. Call me naive, but I am buying it hook, line and sinker.”

Well, call ME naive, but aside from self-hating, liberal sophisticates, the LAST people I’d expect to be exhibiting patriotism would be players from the ThugBA.

Maybe they are waking up the fact that only in the God-blessed USA would they receive the incredible renumeration, on the level of a Grand Duke, for their God-given athletic prowess.

Maybe.

Sure hope so. I'm having a tough time finding a down side to this.

Costas is his usual ugly self. The woman on with Tiki Barber is so snarky I just hit the mute button when she appears.

What a nasty creature. Ugh.

It's sad. Maybe 15 years ago, I really enjoyed his radio show
in which he interviewed many "old school" sports luminaries
like Ted Williams. It was a real "blast from the past" show.

Collinsworth was about the only one worth a damn.

Maybe I'm being too charitable, but I thought Collinsworth
did a good interview with Kobie. And that his note about patriotism
being out of fashion was just an rhetorical comment used to
elicit some sort of comment from the interviewee.

But for me the REAL highlight of NBC's coverage of The Olympics:
NO KATIE KOURIC!!!

I wish softball wasn’t on MSNBC at midnight or in the case of the gold medal game at 3:00 am Pacific Standard Time!

You can watch it live (or replayed) at NBCOlympics.com

No commercials, no commentators and no breaks at all except for what happens in the game itself.

Personally, I think the NBC broadcast coverage stinks, but I give kudos to NBC for providing live online coverage of all the other less-popular events, such as archery, Equestrian cross-country, shooting, sailing, cycling (track, not road), etc. The only events you can't watch online are gymnastics, diving and track and field. Although, I did get to see a few of the steeplechase events, the shotput and discus throwing.

I will probably search around the site to see if I can find the pole-vaulting, hammer throw and a few other track and field events they never show on TV.

In fact, I'm watching the synchronized swimming event right now.

Is it just me, or does the NBC Olympics log remind one of the Campbell soup can?

I can’t remember their names, but the swimming commentators were hilarious when the Americans snuck in and won the mens’ 4x100 relay. It was this summer’s “Do you believe in miracles” moment. And they were unablishedly thrilled for this country.

This is why I’m glad we boycotted Moscow in 1980, could you imagine the lip service NBC would have given the Soviets then.

Kobe should have said that only in America can a pencil neck
chicken chest like Collingsworth play a major sport. Kudos,
to Lebon James for his conduct and play at the Olympics.

"Bob Costas and Cris Collinsworth know sports and nothing else.

That's giving both of them a lot more credit than they deserve.

Sports? Countless hours of "beach volleyball?" Wall to wall boxing? Wall to wall soccer? Wall to wall basketball? Hours of bicycle racing?

Other than beach volleyball, all the other events that you mentioned have been contested at the Olympics for something like 75 years. I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "classic" events.
