Sour-faced Bob Costas and Cris Collinsworth should take a lesson from the enthusiastic, America-loving Bela Karolyi.
----------------------------------------------------
Being the typical American family 2.1 kids, house in the burbs, yappy dog the Olympic Games have been running in the background pretty much non-stop at our house. In the evening, after work, I settle down with everyone else and watch what Bob Costas and company have for me that night.
Maybe its just the fact that after three days both fish and avuncular TV anchors stink, but the NBC talking heads have gotten on my last olfactory nerve.....

That's why seeing the mens basketball team, NBAers all, display open patriotism has been so refreshing and joyful for me. I know the cynical will say it's just a show, but I don't think it is. Call me naive, but I am buying it hook, line and sinker.
Seeing as Bolt was set to blow away the 100m world record, I can't see how they could be blamed for focusing on the guy.
And, during the opening ceremonies, Costas and the other commentators took some pretty pointed jabs at China's position on Sudan and other issues. They also didn't shy away too much from the issue of whether the Chinese gymnasts were underage.
I think people are just looking for a reason to be outraged.
In their rush to seem "relevant," they have forgotten that most of look to sports as an escape from silly pompous leftists.

Well, call ME naive, but aside from self-hating, liberal sophisticates, the LAST people I’d expect to be exhibiting patriotism would be players from the ThugBA.
Maybe they are waking up the fact that only in the God-blessed USA would they receive the incredible renumeration, on the level of a Grand Duke, for their God-given athletic prowess.
Maybe.
“They and ESPN are so full of social consciousness PC crap that they have sucked all the fun out of sports.

Wonderful.
I immediately cancelled my Sports Illustrated subscription this past year (with a detailed editorial), when they ran a major feature of the impact of global warming on sports.
Bump for the excellent insight.
Bob Costa is a %$#*&*$ *%$*#@!!!!!!!
Condescending, elitist, arrogant and generally a putz.
You want patriotism from leftist-owned networks?
I heard Collingsworthless interviewing Kobe Bryant. He asked him if it was uncool to be proud of America in this day and age. To Kobe’s credit, he said he was very proud. Just for Collingsworthless to ask the question made me ill. I can’t stand him.
Actually, the whole reason the American BBall team is calling itself the “Redeem Team” is so they can proactively counter the thug image BBall has developed. They are doing everything they can, supposedly, to be upright, positive role models.
NBC’s coverage choices have also been rather odd. They’re still playing 5 year old C+ movies on USA and running episodes of Dr Phil during the day, and running few live events during the overnight. (I’m often up at 3-4am.) Why not scour the events, and re-run the exciting ones during the day (instead of the pre-lims in ping-pong, with the US vs Nigeria, neither of whom is expected to go to the quarter-finals), and run live “lesser” events after midnight until 6am. (Noon-6pm in Beijing... you know, actually LIVE live.) They wouldn’t be sacrificing any ratings overnight, and allowing plenty of TiVo-ing. I tihnk they’d get more traction, better ratings, and more interst overall.
I did see them show the woman’s discus. I believe it was Monday night.
The last Olympics I watched for more than a few minutes was 1992.
I thought it was worth a try to see if things had improved any since then.
Nope. If anything, things are worse.
I may not live long enough to watch another. After spending several hours a night over the last two weeks, I know I have no desire to watch another.
Sports?
Countless hours of "beach volleyball?"
Wall to wall boxing?
Wall to wall soccer?
Wall to wall basketball?
Hours of bicycle racing?
I thought blocking out ESPN would spare me all that BS.
Does anyone even have a clue what the classic Olympic events were? Where are they?
Finally, in the 21st century, the Olympic Committee seems unable, in spite of satellite communications, the internet, and 500 cable channels, to organize events so anyone can find the events of his choice --- without having to watch hours of crap in the off-chance that a worthwhile event might pop up by accident --- totally unpredictably!
R.I.P. Olympics, for Publius6961
Me either, but I laugh everytime I see his fake hair with the little feathered bangs. He gives John Edwards a run for his money.
When i heard that NBC would be hosting the Olympics on TV, I resigned myself to the fact that people like Costas and Collinsworth would iritate me.....if i let them. I pretty much ignore the idiots and don’t watch their commentary.
You mean the disgustingly low-class, embarrassingly gauche sports shoe salesman?
I did not take time to read this post but have to say I have found the Olympics coverage by NBC to be excellent. They have done a very, very good job covering the games. The annoying feature fluff of the past games that took time away from the events is gone. The commercials while too many for the opening ceramony do not seem to get in the way now. Great Job on this one NBC.
Collinsworth has always been an elitist sniveling entitled little shit. He is from the same mold as John Edwards a total, holierthanthou phony.
I wish softball wasn’t on MSNBC at midnight or in the case of the gold medal game at 3:00 am Pacific Standard Time!
No commercials. No commentators. Just hours of classic Olympic events.
