A founding member of long-running Virginia jam band the Dave Matthews Band has passed away, a rep for the band has revealed in a statement released to Access Hollywood. He was 46 years old.
LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia, the rep stated. Moore had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.
Moore, who played flute and pennywhistle in addition to a variety of saxophones, performed on all of the bands albums. His playing is prominently featured on such hits as Ants Marching and Crush.
Dave Matthews Band performed on Tuesday night in Los Angeles despite the loss, opening with the song Bartender a song about being near death with the band visibly upset, some in tears as they played, according to an Access source on the scene.
According to the source, Matthews then paid tribute to his bandmate, saying, We will miss him forever.
“Oh yeah? I like Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow. Who’s the bigger dork now?”
Ha! I don’t know, you may have beat me with Barry Manilow!
Very sad... DMB was basically the soundtrack to my high school years. RIP
As a hardcore DMB fan, I’m at a loss for words as to what to say about this. LeRoi will truly be missed. No one else can fill his shoes; there’s no doubt about that. Another fear is that the band might break up (I’ve heard some rumors).
