Henry Cejudo called it the American dream.
The son of undocumented Mexican immigrants who had to work two jobs to keep food on the table, Cejudo gave the U.S. its first Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling in Beijing with a stunning win Tuesday over Japan's Tomohiro Matsunaga in the 55-kilogram (121 pounds) final
"I'm living the American dream right now, man," Cejudo, wrapped in an American flag, said moments after his win. "The United States is the land of opportunity. It's the best country in the world and I'm just glad to represent it."
A joyful Cejudo, 21, broke into tears on the mat at the end of the match, then took a victory lap around the China Agricultural University Gymnasium.
"This is what I always wanted," he said. "The frustration was let out. The hard work and everything.

The good old LA Times — calling them “undocumented immigrants.”
This may sound harsh, but if I had my way, Henry Cejudo wouldn’t even be an American citizen. Nothing against the kid, but his parents made the wrong decision to come here illegally, and our government is also wrong for declaring that a child born to an illegal alien is an automatic US citizen. The offspring should also be an illegal alien, in my view. The 14th Amendment is not meant to cover this sort of thing. It was supposed to cover former slaves born in the US — NOT to cover people breaking into this country and then procreating so that their offspring are citizens and the parents get the welfare benefits. That system is messed up.
This is not the embodiment of the American Dream as I see it. OK, good for the kid for winning a gold medal, congrats and all of that, and he is evidently proud of his acquired country. But illegal aliens do not represent the American Dream, no matter how much the LA Times tries to sugarcoat it with glowing references and innocuous euphemisms.
Didn’t I hear once before that the reason Mexico doesn’t do better at the Olympics is that every Mexican that can run, jump or swim is already here?
Henry “Nacho Libre” Cejudo.
I’m sick of the press in this country.
They aren’t “undocumented immigrants”. That’s like calling burglars “undocumented home guests”. They’re ILLEGAL ALIENS.
Well, I’m proud he is an American and glad he is an American.
Does that make illegal aliens o.k.?
No. But, hey, cut the guy a break - he IS an American.
Well, to be more charitable, and correct, he inherits his parents nationality, so it's not like he's stateless, as is sometimes implied in an attempt to generate sympathy for his "plight".
And he seems OK with being Mexican, at least ethnically. If he had grown up there it might be different; obviously his mother thought so - she did anything to keep from going home.
Uh-Huh.
So, um, when the last WASP leaves L.A. - sometime in 2010, at the rate we're going - and Joe Arpaio is frog marched out of Phoenix in 2020 by Mestizo warriors - will you call the remaining people "Americans"? Simply because they managed to occupy the land?
If so, then is invasion just another civil right?
I saw the match this morning, good for him. It was a great match. Sorry his parents were illegals, but he was a proud American this morning.
Right, the offspring would be a Mexican national, just like the parents. Or replace “Mexican” with the appropriate country for illegals from other nations.
“The United States is the land of opportunity. It’s the best country in the world and I’m just glad to represent it.” A joyful Cejudo, 21, broke...”
I have no problem with that attitude.
But this...
“The son of undocumented Mexican immigrants who had to work two jobs to keep food on the table, ‘
Yes, well so did my grandparents, parents and me. Welcome to the USA. Most of us have to work hard.
“Illegal Immigrant anchor baby”
GIVE IT A REST!
He is a U.S. citizen just like you and me.
Can’t you cheer for the guy and this great country?
Don’t you know that all legal citizens of the U.S. are filthy rich and are too good to work? We just aimlessly wander while illegals keep this country running smoothly. That’s why we need the illegals. /s
“”This is cool. Coming out of a Mexican American background, it feels good to represent the U.S.,” said Cejudo, who was born in Los Angeles. “Not too many Mexicans get the chance to do that.””
This is troubling. “Not too many Mexicans”......does he see himself as a Mexican? Either you’re a USA American, or you’re not, Cejudo, which is it?
He is on the American team and won a gold medal. Can’t we just applaud his accomplishment? Most folks never win gold medals in the Olympics. I never have.
I was watching one of those true life medical shows the other day filmed at Johns Hopkins. One of the doctors was Hispanic and a patient came in that was very likely an illegal- the nurse got the Hispanic doctor to treat him since no one else nearby spoke Spanish and the patient did not speak English.
While the doctor was treating him, the man told him he needed his arm fixed so he could work and then went all into how many in his family depended on him working- the doctor said his parents came from Mexico and also had to work hard- then the patient made the crack to the doctor “It is people like us from Mexico that keep this country going forward” and the doctor agreed with him. I was so pi$$ed I turned the show off. The nerve!!! If that is their attitude they need to go back to Mexico and see if they can get it to move forward.
If he is proud of it maybe he should have joined Mexico team. He may have dual citizenship.
“We just aimlessly wander while illegals keep this country running smoothly. Thats why we need the illegals. /s”
Exactly. By golly, they’ll teach us how to make this a forward, prosperous, lawful country.... just like Mexico.
