Border Patrol Event Attracts Immigrant Protest
Rochester News ^ | Aug 16, 2008 | Jen Markham

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection recruitment event in downtown Rochester Saturday was the target of an immigrant rights demonstration. More than two dozen protesters lined the sidewalk outside the Clarion Hotel on Main Street, where inside, the U.S. Border Patrol was trying to attract applicants to be a part of the federal agency that’s slated to add more than 6,000 employees this year.

The demonstrators outside held signs promoting equal rights and denouncing racism, which are ideas they say the Border Patrol doesn't embrace.

"We are here to let the recruits know and the public in general know what the Border Patrol is doing to these immigrants,” said Roberto Resto, with the Rochester Alliance for Immigrant Rights. “You know, the Border Patrol is coming into their houses at five o'clock in the morning, breaking down the doors and sending them to detention centers and the families don't know where they are."

Resto is blaming the Border Patrol for recent raids on area farm workers that they say have torn families apart...

Border Patrol recruiters here say the raids these protesters are talking about, aren't what they do.

“Obviously what they were protesting is not something that's done by the Border Patrol,” said Joseph Arata, Assistant Director of the National Recruitment Division of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “The Border Patrol's main mission is to keep illegal goods, illegal drugs, illegal weapons, people that are undocumented out of the country. We don't do raids. That's a different agency..."

Protesters are hoping their demonstration, and others like it nationwide, will help draw attention to the need for immigration reform in the U.S.

The border patrol held a recruitment drive at the races here in Brooklyn this weekend as well.

It really shows the plight of our nation when protests are made against enforcing the law against criminal invaders. Even more troubling, is the likelihood of the criminal invaders participating in the protest.

I’ll bet my entire net worth that there wasn’t even one protester who was genuinely interested in “immigrant rights”.

Call this rabble what it was: a group of illegal aliens and their sympathizers, gathering in the name of rights for people who have broken a myriad of laws since the day they entered this country, and who have absolutely no respect for America.

Even more troubling is law enforcement didn't arrest the ILLEGALS when they were right in their face.

PATHETIC!

Immigrant Rights? These dirtbags shouldn't be allowed to hijack the term. A legal immigrant ought to have the right to have their application considered in a fair and timely manner. This is truly what immigrant rights should be.

Immigrant rights are not the ability to sneak in, jump ahead of the line and put the interests of illegal aliens ahead of the rights of legal immigrants. And that is exactly what's happening by their efforts to blur the clear line between the two groups.

The radio ads before this event touting the challenge to protect our borders from terrorists, invaders and the like and the rewards for doing so made me want to carry a sign “Ask Ramos and Campaen how it feels to protect our borders”. Anyway I’m thinking that they’re implying to protect the Canadian border.

2 dozen protesters wooow!!! And this local media outlet reports this as news? I’m sure they were very disappointed that there weren’t more of them out there protesting in favor of lawbreakers and opposed to law enforcers.

What a racist buttmunch. They're illegal aliens, not immigrants.

”The scum protesting are aided and abetted by our slimy politicians.

You hit the nail right on the head! We The People are caught between a rock and a hard place when We The People can’t legally do anything to slow down or prevent this invasion and our scum-bag politicians refuse to enforce the laws that they themselves enacted.

I have nothing but respect for the U.S. Border Patrol, but seriously, who in their right mind would touch that job with so many traitors in our government ready to imprison you on the spot should you actually perform your duties (Ramos and Campaen)? Not me…

Sad, isn’t it? It’s the inevitable result of politicians “forgetting” that they work FOR US. They consider The People as little better than slaves, or cannon fodder to further their own interests.

Sickening!
