Potential VP candidate (Rob Portman) rallies Hamilton County GOP

Predicting a close election in November, former Bush Administration official and Ohio congressman Rob Portman called on Hoosiers to back Republican presidential candidate John McCain at rally Tuesday evening in Fishers.

“He’s an authentic American hero and a common sense conservative,” Portman told the partisan crowd.

Portman is on McCain’s short list of potential vice presidential running mates. A six-term congressman, he also served as the United States Trade Representative and most recently as President Bush’s Director of the Office of Management and Budget, a post previously held by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

The VP fields on both sides appear to be narrowing. And who is chosen will be far more important than it usually is.

It is all about image, nothing about ability or experience. It will be a woman, or a black...to ‘balance’ the ticket.

Rob Portman is a former Congressman from Ohio who has served in the Bush administration. He's well-regarded in his home town of Cincinnati.

McCain will be in Lake County (the county where I was born). Every Presidential candidate has been there since Bob Dole. That county is nearly a swing county now.

I remember I was in downtown Cleveland working late. John Kerry had a rally around 9:00 or 9:30 p.m. literally across the street. Hardly anyone was there. I did report that here on FR. LOL.
