MANHEIM -- John McCain's last stop on a three-day swing across Pennsylvania provided clues as to how the Republican plans to beat Barack Obama in a battleground state the Democrat is favored to win.

Yes, McCain can win Pa. and it is lights out for Obama if he does, but will the most conservative Republicans—those who wanted one of McCain’s primary opponents to win the nomination—vote for him in November? Winning the Reagan Democrats and the fence sitters may not be enough. A more conservative ticket mate such as Romney or Palin might be just enough to push him over the top in Pa. and Michigan.
PA just seems always out of reach; there are so few other competitive states to contest too.
The article states John McCain as 74....
I’m sitting here with my” OfficalObama Energy Plan” tire
pressure gage. The lastest McCainad on TV and on his website
is called Broken. The voice-over sounds like Martin Sheen.
Has anyone heard the voice on the ad?

It amazes me the stupidity of the remarks of those who suggest adding a “more conservative” Romney to the ticket would fix things for McCain. McCain is more conservative than Romney also more of a Christian for that matter. Romney has never governed as a conservative. We have no example of a voting record for him. All we have is the hope that this handsome man with a lot of money who ordered clerks to issue marriage licenses for gays, create a health care plan that led to more state funded abortions, and grew state government and spending in Massachusetts is really now a conservative because he says he is. Well I expect more than that and so should we. Also adding a Mormon to the ticket just has the potential to stir up all kinds of talk about the phoney-baloney crap Mormons believe in. You think Reverend Wright was bad just wait till the left get to beating on Mitt Romney. Mitt seems like a nice guy but I don’t see how anyone who looks at the big picture could think of adding such a wet-fish to the ticket.
McCain I can look at the bulk of his voting record and from that come to a sense of trust of the man. He is not a liberal and has never been even though sometimes he has cooperated with them for what he believed was the common good. As for Romney it is clear that he most certainly was a liberal. Not a little “l” liberal but a great big “L” liberal. I would not support adding Romney to the ticket.
It would be a step back for McCain. McCain needs someone that will add to the ticket, a younger man, like Pawlenty someone who is clearly conservative but not abrasive. A safe pick is what McCain needs. VPs never in the end cause a huge shift in votes so pretending that they do is a futile argument. There is no magic choice but there are many BAD choices. McCain should stay away from his also rans.
I agree. Santorum would make a great veep, but he lost too badly to Casey to be a good choice. How about former US Rep. William Miller, the guy who ran with Goldwater in ‘64? Is he still alive?
I think Santorum would have won with a little more support from the GOP, but I guess they were too intent on dissociating themselves from all those embarrassing conservatives.
Same thing with Specter’s primary. America could have been rid of that jackass, but Bush came to his rescue.
