Ok—lets get real. NATO really had no business offering membership to Georgia. If we were trying to antagonize Russia, this was certainly the way to do it. Much like have a communist regime in Nicaragua and Cuba has antogonized us. Given that Russia has nukes, it would be suicidal for us to land NATO troops in Georgia to defend it.
That being said, I think this whole thing will backfire on Russia. It already has caused Poland to sign on to Missile Defense. Of course, they have more b@lls than the rest of the EU. I think Russia is correct if it thinks it can intimidate the EU.
One last thing—if Russia was smart, it would be much more concerned with keeping a lid on the Muslims to its South and East—that is the real threat, not the US or EU to its West.
