BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.—Donald Trump will soon be Ed McMahon's landlord.

Trump announced Thursday he would save the television personality's Beverly Hills mansion from foreclosure by buying it for an undisclosed amount and leasing it to McMahon.

The developer told the Los Angeles Times he doesn't know McMahon personally, but acted out of compassion because helping out "would be an honor."

McMahon, 85, who was Johnny Carson's sidekick on the "Tonight" show for three decades, has not worked for about 18 months because of a neck injury. He defaulted on $4.8 million in mortgage loans with Countrywide Financial Corp.

Hate to sound cold but surely someone as famous as Ed McMann should have been able to save enough and retire-retire before 85 without a bailout.

I think trump is a jerk! why didn’t he just buy and GIVE McMahon the home. He sure is getting enough free PR...you can’t buy that much TV time for what it would have cost him/
Trump is a jerk.

How do you know that McMahon’s young trophy wife won’t divorce him and boot him out of a now paid-for house? How do you know that the lawyers who represented McMahon’s daughter in a divorce and claim that McMahon owes them $ 250K won’t get the house and boot him out? What about other creditors that we don’t know about?

Trump is using good business sense — lease it to the old guy for a nominal amount and keep the equity in the house as a future investment. Jerk, maybe. Fool, no.

Good for him!

I second that. However based on a few comments in this thread thus far, the saying "No good deed goes unpunished" sure seems to have merit.

The fact is, Trump is acting towards McMahon in a respectful manner, he isn't just buying the house and giving it to McMahon, he is leasing the house back, which quite frankly preserves McMahon's dignity, it may seem like an insignificant factor, but it counts for something.

And let's be realistic about it: Ed McMahon has not been in the best of health, and at 85 even he knows that he is in the twilight of his life, being able to live out however many years he has left in his own home is a good and decent thing that Trump has done for McMahon.

God bless them both.

I can’t believe this either. I never would have thought that someone like Ed McMahon would have trouble paying his bills.

I wonder where all the money he earned went?

That’s nice but why didn’t Trump just do it silently?

How is Trump going to get the dim bulb young wife out of there when Ed moves on to the next world.

If Donald Trump doesn't know how to evict widows and orphans, who in the world does?

Trump may be a jerk but not because of this. I don’t really care about Ed McMahon but I’m grateful to Trump for bailing him out so I don’t have to.

Hate to sound cold

Me too, but McMahon has already enjoyed a charmed life, and
I know hundreds of poor folks who Trump could of helped, they keep coming from Illinois,
where Obama took a salary as a Senator, but was worthless to the folks there;

many folks voted with their feet,
and left for Minnesota, 4 to 1;

http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:ceIdNP71Lx8J:www.demography.state.mn.us/DownloadFiles/MN-Migrants90s.pdf+moving+from+illinois+to+minnesota&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=24&gl=us

Between 1995 and 2000
Minnesota experienced a
net gain of more than 9,000
black alone people from other
states. Illinois accounted for
the greatest net gain. The
number of black residents
moving to Minnesota from
Illinois exceeded the number
moving in the opposite
direction by almost four to
one.

**
**
may I add, many of these folks are good folks who want to escape the
terrible conditions politicians like Obama fostered in Illinois,
I am so proud to see these folks go from welfare to work because they really want to enjoy life.
If the nursing home is good enough for Granny, it’s good enough for McMahon.
Trump, you could make a difference, but
like most the rest of the Democrats,
you money ain’t where your mouth is, well,
unless a privileged friend is involved.

Everybody wins here. Well, almost everyone. Donald gets positive PR, Ed gets to stay in his home, the bank avoids foreclosure costs (most likely). If it was a short sale, the lender forgives some of the debt.. and we all know who will be paying for that!

Is he also helping out Ed's lovely ex-wife, whom he dumped unceremoniously in Pennsylvania when he was first given the opportunity to make it big in Hollywood with Johnny Carson?
