I’ve only spent a week in China, but was fascinated at how people had meaningless jobs just to give them something to do. I watched how some had the job of pointing to an excalator for at least 6 hours a day, every day. Nothing else, but pointing. They basically were the equivalent of signs, even though there was already a sign there to point to the escalator. One day the escalator wasn’t working, but they were still standing there and pointing down the hall to another escalator where yet another person stood and pointed to it.
