Only in Bizzaroworld. The flag of the United States flies over Michigan. The flag of Georgia did not fly anywhere in South Ossetia at the time it was attacked by Georgia.
South Ossetia has been officially autonomous since the 1920s. In contrat to Michigan, it has been defacto independent (along with Georgia) since the fall of the Soviet Union.
Michigan is a constituent member of the United States. I am not sure what the status of South Ossetia may be.
That said, it seems to me that most of the posters here are missing the key point. Clinton's unAmerican intrusion into the Serbian Civil War left us no moral authority to pose as holy in relation to what is going on in or around Georgia. Tunnel vision does not add to anybody's credibility.
That said, I have no idea who are the more righteous of the participants in the Caucuses, and can only wonder at the reliability of the sources that some, here, seem to be relying on.
However, when confronted by garbage that defends rapists, arsonists, and murderers and then lies and says the victims did it... Well, as you can see I have ended up calling them what they are and civility is uncalled for IMO.
Yes, they are an incredible people, which is why, I think those of us who go there can never forget them. They have an honor and integrity about them that is very inspiring.
I thought you were great. :-)
You came from that Bizzoworld, as far as I am concerned.
You don’t know anything about South Ossetia. You should get an education before you post.
South Ossetia is a smuggling and money laundering haven for criminal gangs from Russia. They have a former soviet wrestler for a leader (can you say puppet?), the elections were questionable at best in the fine tradition of Russia, and the industry is negligible.
another good explanation is here.
"Indeed, it can be difficult to distinguish between Ossetians and other Georgians due to high levels of inter-marriage and assimilation. Ossetians have been more a part of the Georgian state than other minorities."
Gamsakurdia was a huge problem for Georgia in a lot of ways.
Nice little speech but you sound like Obama (all generalities and no substance). If I am wrong, provide some evidence. BTW, it is Bizzaroworld, not Bizzoworld.
Your post was about the same quality as mine.
"During the reigns of his succesors, the borders of the Georgian Kingdom expanded still wider from Nicopsia (a city between modern Sokhi and Tuapse) to Derbent (on the Caspian Sea) and from Ossetia (North Caucasus) to Mt. Ararat in Armenia."
And the Abkhaz are all over in the writing.
Both are historically a part of Georgia since medieval time.
Thanks for the primer but in medieval times, of course, the Mongols ruled Russia and China and the Greeks ruled Turkey. That period was so long ago that provides little to no help to judging the current situation. I am more interested in the last eighty years, especially the period since 1991. What is the record for that period?
In Tbilisi they still have much of the feudal fortress in place and you can visit it. It is called Narakala.
1991 is irrelevant.
Have you heard about Dmansi?
Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and the Kura river. The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulphur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church.
The fortress was established in the 4th century as Shuris-tsikhe (i.e., "Invidious Fort"). It was considerably expanded in the 7th century and later, by king David the Builder (1089-1125). The Mongols renamed it "Narin Qala" (i.e., "Little Fortress").
I could say the say the same for villages in Iraq which were once ruled by the Persians, countless Turkish or North African villages which were ruled by the Greeks. Ancient History is always a useful guide to the current situation on the ground. The cold hard fact that is that Georgia rules territory which rejects its rule. The South Ossetians have rights too. In any case, I am not suggesting that we pick sides, only that we stay out that mess.
Almost every country in the world has a separatist region.
We should never have given Kosovo away.
Well...on that basis, that “separatist” George Washington deserved to be sent to the gallows, didn’t he?
