Russian General Threatens Poland with Attack over US deal
Jerusalem Post ^ | 15 Aug 2008 | Associated Press

Posted on 08/15/2008 6:40:42 AM PDT by docbnj

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland's agreement to accept a US missile defense battery exposes the country to attack, pointing out that Russian military doctrine permits the use of nuclear weapons in such a situation, the Interfax news agency reported. *** Interfax said he added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia's military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons "against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them." Nogovitsyn said that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, according to Interfax.

But Russia views them as upsetting the strategic balance. Which, if these are just Patriots, is kind of funny in a way.

What do you propose that “we” do militarily.

And, is it fair to surmise that you aren’t including yourself, or one of your children within “we”? Of course not, because no one with any skin in the game would propose military action with Russia over what has occurred to date. It can be quite easy to play god with others’ lives. Why don’t you pick up your gun and lead the way?

Are you included in the “we” that you refer to? Is this a giant video game or board game like Risk to you? Easy to talk tough when you’re not going to have to pay a price.

Interesting that you call me a jackass. Only a jackass would ask the question.

Riiiiiiiiiiiight. I almost forgot. Thanks for the clarification.

BTW, what shape do you think the Russian mechanized infantry is in, judging by the way their conscripts are robbing banks in Georgia? Based upon that readiness (and that of the Russian BW navy and air forces) how do think the readiness of Russian strategic nuclear weapons measures up?

I’m not suggesting we go to war over Georgia. What I was asserting was the capability of US forces, tactical, theater, or strategic, to wipe the floor with the best the Russians can offer.

As far as nuclear war is concerned, we operated on the premise of MAD for years. The ONLY way that that premise worked was because the bad guys were afraid of being annihilated if they staged an attack. Thus, the attitude of bringing it on. If you think the Neo-Soviets will reeeeeeeeeeally start a nuclear exchange over Poland... think again.

The Russians are insane...............

The average life expectancy of a Russian male is 58. There are reasons for that low number. Also, IIRC, Russia has the highest rate of abortion in the world. This has led to disastrous demographics. This demographic catastrophe (coupled with their tragic history) has produced massive paranoia, fear, and aggression.

The U.S. reaction to having missiles 90 miles off our coast is fairly analogous to the Russian reaction over this issue.

Maybe the reaction is the same but not warranted. I see a huge difference between offensive weapons and purely defensive weapons.

I’m having a hard time justifying a reason to myself.

LOL! You have a hard time seeing the difference between a defense from nuclear devastation with a shield and placing offensive first strike nuclear ballistic missiles?

A few dozen ABM missiles is no threat to Russia. They have over 1000 nuclear weapons. Moreover, there is no more defensive system than one meant to destroy ballistic missiles.
There is no comparison to Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba and any such comparison is one based on ignorance or an obscene relativism.

Be prepared to be called a commie, a coward, and a traitor by the armchair commando brigade.

That's fine. I was an enlisted soldier for 10 years earning the rank of E-6, during that time I earned two combat stars. Later I went through OCS and became a signal officer. Now, years later I am enjoying my well earned civilian freedoms. At this point in life if some armchair commando wants to question my courage or patriotism, they are welcome to do so. I am quite comfortable chuckling at them.

this week on a Cspan panel of experts on this area, Ralph Peters told how the russians have a new foreign poliyc that says they have the right to militarily invade any country in the worldto “Protect the DIGNITY” of any russian citizen.

Uh, could we try that to protect the dignity of an American citizen in France ?

This message may have already been delivered by Condi - if Russia doesn't sign an agreement and "declare victory and go home" and let the West to provide "peacekeeping and humanitarian help."

Putin has nothing to gain fighting a war for occupation of a proxy next to his borders, without any pretense anymore and all his neighbors and the rest of the world against him. It's not even Afghanistan that nobody cared about and Soviet Union was much stronger militarily than Russia is today. He has a choice now to save face and claim "victory" and "protection of autonomous areas", or be eventually kicked out. He had his "show of force" and I am not irrelevant" moment, mow he should take what is offered to him as the best he can ever get and be happy, if he can, because he precipitated his neighbors and even his appeasers and public defenders anxieties and corresponding turn to the "arms" (double-entendre here) of the West, specifically US.

We answered his "ultimatum" and have chosen sides (democracy) and Condi delivered that message unequivocally, loud and clear to the Russian reporter during press conference:
"This is not 1968! Things have changed! Russia cannot overrun a capital of the country and change its government unchallenged".

And they want some degree of control over the Patriot missile batteries.

You cannot put enough Patriot batteries in Poland to stop an all out Russian attack. Poland must have the ability to annihilate the Russians if the Russians annihilate them. That is the only thing that will take the Russian first strike option on Poland, off the table. The US should now put the first strike option against Russia back on the table in defense of Poland, until the Russians retract their threat.
