N.Y. Plans to Monitor Every Car in Manhattan

The New York City Police Department is working on a plan to photograph the license plates of every vehicle entering Manhattan in an effort to guard against a terrorist attack.

The plan, called Operation Sentinel, calls for photographing and scanning the license plates of cars and trucks at all bridges and tunnels, and using sensors to detect the presence of radioactivity, The New York Times reports.

Data on each vehicle would be sent to a command center in Lower Manhattan, where it would be stored for at least a month and then eliminated if it were not linked to a law enforcement investigation, according to Paul Browne, deputy police commissioner for public information.

“Our main objective would be to … find out about a plot before it ever got to a stage where a nuclear device or a dirty bomb was coming our way,” Browne told The Times. “This provides for our defense after a plot has already been launched and a device is on its way.”

Steven Emerson, executive director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism in Washington, said: “The bottom line is they can’t frisk everybody coming into Manhattan. They can’t wand everyone as they do at airports.”

The plan is “one tool of ensuring that if there is somebody on a terrorist watch list or someone driving erratically, or if a pattern develops that raises suspicions, it gives them an opportunity to investigate further and if need be, track down the drivers or the passengers,” he told The Times.

In places like Manhattan you can assume you’re on camera all the time anyway.

How does that work? Photographing a license plate does nothing to stop a suicide attack.

Second, look to get a bill for using the NYC streets soon after.

Anybody going into Manhattan voluntarily ought to have their head examined.

Council Member Gale Brewer, who represents the Upper West Side, said she introduced the bill after receiving a steady stream of complaints from constituents who were frustrated with stores that kept their doors propped open in the summer, allowing cold air to flow out of the building onto the sidewalk.

“Anybody going into Manhattan voluntarily ought to have their head examined.”

Like my father used to tell my mother who always wanted to go back to NYC...”Dear, I didn’t leave anything behind, so I have no reason to go back.” LOL

This does nothing to advert an attack. How do you know what is in the vehicle. If they are assuming an attack will be a truck 5 Gross Tons or more, then a van will work nicely.

But you know that and I know that but NYC has to find some way of spending those millions that congress has allocated to the city for “fighting the war on terrorism”...besides there are still a NY politicians who have relatives who aren’t receiving government paychecks...for doing NOTHING!

The USSC has ruled you can’t use electronic devices to prove INSIDE homes without a warrent. (rio linda transaltion: you can’t use tech to circumvent warrent requirements)

That said, the fourth amendment is lower for vehicles on the road. (see: reasonable wait for drug dogs to arrive)

This has NOTHING to do with homeland security, this is just boobberg trying to come up with a “gate tax” to his kingdom.

This is about creating a city toll.

Bloomberg wants to tax people for using roads financed by the federal government and the state.

footnote: there are federal laws regarding open access to roads financed by federal dollars. This was done in order to prevent jim crow style movement laws. (be across the rr tracks by midnight type laws)

I see this as logging the commuters so when they plan on a toll or commuter tax they will show it is Jersey residents or out of towner’s that will be paying.
