But why would the Georgians make it up? It won’t take long at all for the truth to come out so what’s to be gained?

Aha! In the Fox News story linked above, there’s this”
“Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Zurab Gvenetadze said that Russian forces seized a military base on the outskirts of Gori, situated on Georgia’s only significant east-west road.”
So maybe it’s a move into a base and not the city itself?
That would explain why the journos haven’t seen anything.
