The Edwards' shame
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | August 11, 2008 | Editorial

Posted on 08/12/2008 5:04:43 PM PDT by Graybeard58

By now, just about everyone has heard former Sen. John Edwards' non-apology apology for his affair with a former campaign aide. It turns out that despite his repeated, emphatic denials, he's a bigger hypocrite than even we imagined. But in gaining entry to that growing, bipartisan fraternity of immoral politicos, he exhibited especially despicable behavior for which he and his enabling wife, Elizabeth, must be condemned. Simply put, they exploited her breast cancer to cultivate his phony family-values image and cash in on the public's sympathy to advance their political ambitions. Mrs. Edwards' battle against an incurable disease and his frequent, ostentatious proclamations of his undying fidelity to her in her time of need turned out to be tawdry political theater. She knew he was unfaithful to her before he announced for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, yet they made their supposedly rock-solid marriage the centerpiece of the campaign to try to make the socialist Mr. Edwards more palatable to the political center and right.

Worse is the example his promiscuity, and her cynical sanctioning of it, sets for the low-income people he claims to champion. It's bad enough that the Edwards' lavish lifestyle never matched his anti-poverty populism, and that his Center for Promise and Opportunity is in business mostly to pay to fly him around the country to deliver sound bites to fawning journalists. But by cheating on his wife and, his denial notwithstanding, likely fathering a child out of wedlock, he promoted the very behavior that has sown the seeds of poverty for many millions of Americans and brought so much misery to so many of single mothers and their children.

Millionaires such as John Edwards always can buy their way out of the financial consequences of their immorality. The same can't be said for the millions of impoverished suckers who live by his code. The Edwards' should be ashamed, but shame doesn't appear to be in their vocabulary.

This guy is truly the scum of the scummiest. The only thing he hasn’t said to the press yet is that he was having a baby with a surogate to replace the child that the Edwards lost. I’m sure he’s already thought of it.

As a former trial lawyer, I’m sure he is familiar with the terms, Grand Jury, indictment, subpoenas, co-conspirators, state witnesses, plea bargains.

If they discover campaign money was used as hush money, there’s another term he will get to know. “Empty everything out of your pockets, put them in this envelope and slip it into the slot below the window”.

Good points here. He says he didn’t father the child, it was physically impossible he says. I wonder if they did “safe sex”. Good points about what a bad example this is, to do the things that cause out of wedlock births and the resulting social problems that revolve around those out of wedlock births.

What a crock of feces foisted on the public that Edwards was a 'champion' of the poor working class. That so many sheeple Americans fawned over this shyster is scary weird!

Are you forgetting which political party he’s a member of? He won’t pay for his crimes, he will go back to his practice or on the highly paid lecture tour and do quite well.....That’s my prediction.

Thinking people had this dip-$hit figured out from day 1. As I have said and will continue to say - is anyone really surprised?

“He says he didn’t father the child, it was physically impossible he says.”

And then a girlfriend of Hunter’s gave an interview and said she believes Edwards is the father of Hunter’s daughter. She said Hunter is in love with Edwards and that their affair certainly did not end in 2006 but continued.

IIRC, it was Carville who excused Edwards’ behavior by saying that it’s no big deal since his wife forgave him and supported him. What a thing to say!

What’s aggravating are the pathetic wimps like Bill O’Reilly who had the info but didn’t report. “The No Spin Zone” yeah, sure, the NO REPORT ZONE. MSM is nothing but a fifth column and need to join the dinosaurs.

I keep telling my husband this has to be the reason he publicly admitted to adultry....because there is worse in that admission of his .001% lie to come! Remember he was only 99.999% honest! :)

And do you think there is a possibility Obama was given advanced warning that this was going to break, and that is the reason he removed himself from the scene to Hawaii?

I do

I don’t know but it is odd that he wanted a vaction now at possibly the worst time to take one unless he wanted good cover for whatever he is up to?

As long as Carville’s mouth is open and his tongue is wagging, he’s defending a democrat somewhere, for something.

I like Carville’s straight forwardness. Maybe when he gets tired of trying to clean the muck and mire off of the dems, he’ll wake up and become a Republican.

Are we being asked to believe MR.Edwards is a one woman whore hound? Reille Hunter is his only secret. Those pearly-whites were cultured for more than one. The adoration which he says seduced him to narcicism had to begin with winning his first big case. He was continually reinforced that he could do no wrong, and for that....he only gets one woman at age 30 or 31 when this began. The monitary reinforcement came to be much less than necessary to feed his perception of himself that it was his destiny to mount these many conquests...mutimillions, adoration of North Carolinians with the enablement of the newspapers,....then election confirming what he always thought of himself....then on to aspire to the Vice Presidency.....through all of this no other woman...no other women?....then the private jets ferrying him all over the world because he was special....no mile high club membership??....then on to run for the presidency.....fidelity lost just once???

Gee, that is a lot to expect the public to believe. And now, that he lied to the press, he lied to the public, he lied to his wife, then last Friday he lied to ABC and the public again...and actually confirmed the fact that he believes we are all imperceptive of his parcing, bobbing and weaving, non-denial, denials,...and he had received the word from Elizabeth and the Lord.

I have known people like this. Mostly in college and observed many in my profession fall with the same self deification. These guys have looks. Then if they top it off with having money they go nuts. Then feel entitled to do this. They think, always, they won't get caught, and even if they do, they can wriggle out of the fix..they always have before.

No, this behavior does not happen just once with someone like Edwards. His hubris tells us this is his chosen way of life. He is not much different than Bill Clinton in self-perception, though I believe Clinton carried it far beyond what Mr.Edwards had time to master...the strongarm intimidations, etc. But the fundamental character was not born in Nov.2006. He has always heard the drums across the jungle convincing him of this this pheromone mediated response.
