SAN FRANCISCO—The U.S. Navy agreed in a settlement approved Tuesday to limit where it operates certain sonar systems criticized by environmentalists as a threat to whales and other marine mammals.

The settlement approved Tuesday by a federal judge in San Francisco restricts the Navy's use of low-frequency sonar to specific military training areas near Hawaii and in the western Pacific Ocean.

A good feeling to know that Chinese subs can now breech our security, what more could we want?, the fish will be safe.

Bush should use the Patriot Act to send the judge to Gitmo, then wait for an opinion from the appellate court.

Goody! Now every Russian and Chinese sub can come along and breach our security.

Just remember reading a book by John Hagee, the Jerusalem countdown about how North Korea planned to launch missiles with an old diesel sub at us. Thanks to the envirofascists, they can do so easily. Leave it up to liberals to make us more defenseless.

I am sure that all the Chicom and Russian subs will just hang around Hawaii so that we can detect them.

I’ve heard about this “threat to whales and other marine mammals” over the last several years but, has this ever been substantiated? Or has it always been speculation and never anything more than that?

This is total madness. Our ships don't go active unless they think they're on to something or to screen high value assets. To blanketly prevent them from doing this at their own discretion is stupidity of the highest order.

How would anyone know if the Navy disregarded its own agreement? This is, after all, Ultra-Low Frequency sonar. I doubt that Rainbow Warrior II can detect it.

This should come under the heading of our armed forces engaged in national security operations. We are at war for god sake.

This judge should be told to jam it.

These unelected, black robed, tyrants think they can run the world.

SCARY - most of the enviros lobbying on this particular issue are funded by the PRC in one way or another. Hmmm, I wonder why...?

That's because training a really experienced, effective sonar guy takes the US Navy something like 20 years to train, and the PRC expects that THEY are the guys the PRC has the most to fear if they try and cross the Straits to take back Taiwan --see?

The Whale Stuff is NOT about whales --it's about TORPEDOS.

Whale-related enviro laws make it hard for the USN to train sonar guys, and that's the way China likes it.
