AUGUSTA, Maine - Gov. John Baldacci said Monday he would propose lowering Maine's personal income taxes in the January session of the Maine Legislature, but how much depends on the state budget now being developed.
"We are going to be doing more budget cutting, more budget restructuring, more efficiencies," he said Monday in an interview. "We have only just begun that process with jails and school administrative districts. More needs to be done, and we are going to do more of that and reduce the income tax on earned income."

Now don't be fooled ladies and gentlemen! Every time Baldy and the Maine legislature comes forward with tax cuts they really mean tax shifts. The rising oil costs have caused an increase in school expenditures and the city of Millbridge is calling for tax hikes. Even if there is a tax decrease it won't last for long and it will probably be very tiny.

Oh my a Democrat cutting taxes! What you need is someone like Don Carcieri he is a GOP governor to be proud of. Too bad Democrats have so badly screwed up state finances.

I’ll believe it when I see it! It’ll never happen. They’ll have to cut spending (no way), and/or add more to the list of things to tax (services, etc), and they’ll do that anyway.
Bottom line: We can’t afford the democrats!! (Can’t trust ‘em either). PERIOD.

They're going to cut spending anyway no matter what happens. The left in Maine have taxed us so bad that all the jobs are going to New Hampshire and elsewhere. No tax base means no tax dollars and no programs for the freeloaders invading our state to suck us down further. Baldacci has had no other alternative and unless we elect a republican and pass the new TABOR amendment next year, we're screwed.

I am... it's already beginning to happen. Baldacci was under so much pressure by even other Democrats that when they had a budget shortfall he refused to raise taxes or use the rainy day fund. The people of Maine are so burdened down and so poor that the idea to raise sales taxes caused an outcry. We need more Conservative activism in Maine. I believe we can turn the tide and take back the state.
Colorado went through the same problem twenty years ago. They had the worst economy in the country, they were being taxed to death and they finally got TABOR passed and look now! Colorado is much better than it was before. We can do it with Maine. We just need some courageous people to stand up.

We had a number of “courageous conservatives” in the Maine GOP in the mid-late 90’s. They were purged by the Republicans themselves! Remember John Hathaway? Maine ain’t Colorado.
