It sounds like SOMEBODY got through to them on the backchannel and told them, “You REALLY don’t want to risk all-out war with certain allies of Georgia, do you?”.

Sounds like folks are working hard behind the scenes. We will probably never learn what was really agreed to.

I hope this development is true because I’ve been tossing and turning at night for the past 2 days over this...

We have friends in Germany that were telling us the same thing yesterday about 1800. I will believe it when it actually happens.

Sarkozy is on his way to Moscow. Russia has no intention of leaving two provinces and says the Georgian president must go.

Not sure how long a ceasefire will last under those conditions.

Contrary to what Putin had expected, oil prices continued to fall. Maybe it wasn’t worth the expense of waging war with oil prices going down instead of up.

This means that we stood up enough to them to make them take pause. The planned travel of those 5 Presidents from ex-communist states probably helped quite a bit. Now, how long will the bear pause ?

Thank God! But I can’t believe it could be this easy. Perhaps Russia got more than they bargained for from Europe. I’m sure there’s a lot of pressure behind the scenes. President Bush is so calm and understated. I hope Russia is going to be “punished” financially much more than they have “punished” Georgia. This is much scarier than Iran. Praying they pull out quickly, nobody even thinks about letting them keep any territory, and ships full of aide with “U.S. Govt” stamped all over it arrive quickly.

We ought to always remember what the Georgian President stated during this crisis, and I paraphrase, but he basically stated that,

The price of freedom can never be set too high.
