We don't need government to regulate everything. San Francisco - Ever-perceived by the rest of the nation as perched on the fringe of rationality, San Francisco is about to flip its lid once again. The lid's color, if it's any comfort, is green as in one of the three recycling bins into which its residents will be forced to sort their food waste.
The consequences for the unwilling, if the mayor has his way? Fines up to $1,000 from the garbage police.
I kid you not. Mayor Gavin Newsom is taking the leap from voluntary environmental engagement to an enforced one. You will recycle, or you'll be outed, says the legislation drafted by the city's Department of the Environment.
Other cities have mandatory recycling. San Francisco is upping the ante, creating the first composting law, directing where you'll dish your table scraps.
Currently, 70 percent of waste escapes the landfill. To meet a goal of recycling 75 percent by 2010, the mayor is about to displace voluntary compliance with mandatory enforcement.
If your coffee grounds are found drizzling through your black bin, not your green, well then, you've just found yourself on the wrong side of the law.
History repeatedly reminds us that extreme fervor by government leads to infringement on basic rights. Yet eager, young, and even brilliant leaders experience moments of impaired reason when confronted with an idea that appears a perfect solution for a historical moment.

Ping!
I’d buy a trash compactor and force ‘em to really work to get the goods on me.
No, just outside the fringe..............
People continue to put up with the nonsense and keep reelecting the same nutty leadership. So what do they expect?
As usual, power hungry people NEVER stop at doing what they can to control every aspect of a persons life.
Several years ago Texas inacted it's seat belt law with the belief that they would not stop you for a selt belt violation alone. If you were stopped for another reason and did not have your seat belt on, then you would be warned or ticketed.
Fast forward a few years. We now have cops stopping every vehicle it can to issue tickets for seat belt violaters. We have stupid billboards, Click it or Ticket. It's ALL ABOUT REVENUE!!!
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result................
(or are live skunks recyclable?)
Get a dog and a new baby and be sure to put the “waste materials” in the trash containers. Make them REALLY work to get the goods...
Socialists never give up.
In order for me to consider SanFran to be “perched on the fringe of rationality”, I would FIRST have to consider SanFran to be somewhere in the same Galaxy as “rationality”.
Perched on the fringe? These people couldn’t see “rationelity” if they used the Hubble telescope.
They even do stakeouts under freeway “u-turns” where they can easily stop a vehicle that is slow or “waiting”.
Meanwhile they leave the crack houses down the street from the central police station operating...
“you might be interested” Pingy...
Do the Billboards actually have the “Tt’s ALL ABOUT REVENUE” part on them? If so, that’s pretty cool.
People are going to take their trash out of the city limits and dump it in the field somewhere. That's the typical result when cities become unreasonable in their trash policy.
My recommendation is that every trash day, people drive to city hall and dump their trash on the front steps.
Have a garbage disposal installed under your sink.
Throw it in your neighbor’s trash bucket...
I would never, ever recommend that someone dump a bottle of this stuff into their trash. I mean if someone got this on their hands and then, God forbid, went to take a leak the pain would be absolutely excruciating.
So all you kids in San Fran, don't ever, ever do anything like that.
L
Not a bad idea. In our rural county in Texas our little town dump (that was very organized and well run) went out of business because of unreasonable “environmental” rules imposed on the business, so he said, “Buh bye y’all!” and we were really in a lurch.
I told the County Commissioner what idiots they were imposing MORE restrictions on a well-run business and to expect trash and garbage on the roadsides and he said naw, folks won’t do that. Well they did, big time. Furniture (couches, tables, chairs), garbage and trash up and down the right-of-ways, it was amazing.
They became more reasonable on the enviro-wacko rules and lo and behold, the dump cranked up again. Yep, dump that stuff at city hall about 2AM. Sift it for any envelopes and addresses! I kinda like the skunk idea too!
