Okay - this is crazy. Please name the school system and state.
Bounty over Scot any day!
The weight of the empty box is written on the outside. The kids must use the triple beam balance to determine the total weight and then calculate the weight of the objects in the box. It not only helps them reinforce math but helps reinforce the metric system that I have just gone over with them.
The kids really get involved, determining the number of objects in the box. Some even calculate what the weight of each individual object is (I tell them ahead of time that if there is more than one object in the box, they are all the same thing)
It is one of the kids favorite labs of the year.
Pennsylvania. Downingtown Area SD — but it’s a private school.
Now arent' you glad you decided to post to me and give me this opportunity to opine on paper towels?!?!?!?

He he. Got a kick out of your post. Never saw the commercial. I don’t give commercials much notice. I just know what I like and I HATE Viva, don’t care for Scot, and only use the cheapies in my laundry room and places where I just need to quickly dry my hands. I think Scot works well but I don’t like the feel.
They should get US on a commercial.
Thanks. Just had lunch with a good friend today and asked her how her school works out the supplies. She is in the Cleveland school system. She says each child’s own supplies stay in their desk. The only thing that is shared are the tissues and the wipes, which she says they run out of very quickly requiring her to buy them with her own $.
Forgive me for being dense but what is a “triple beam balance?”
I retire from the Military in three years. I might go into "Troops to Teachers."
I had previously considered working for the bomb squad but I wanted to try something reckless and dangerous.
Thank you very much for the explanation. Is this something that is already in the lab/classroom?
We now have about 15 of them. Enough for a classroom of 30 kids.
They run about $120 each.
Thanks. I’m not quite ready to buy one yet. Boy they aren’t cheap either.
BTW, what grades do you teach for science? I’m planning to become a science teacher for grades 4-9. I have to pick two fields, required in Ohio, so I’ve chosen language arts and science.
6th graders are introduced into Earth Science
7th graders are taught biology and 8th graders are taught physical science.
Thank you very much.
