Yes, it is the first science lab that I do with my students.

The weight of the empty box is written on the outside. The kids must use the triple beam balance to determine the total weight and then calculate the weight of the objects in the box. It not only helps them reinforce math but helps reinforce the metric system that I have just gone over with them.

The kids really get involved, determining the number of objects in the box. Some even calculate what the weight of each individual object is (I tell them ahead of time that if there is more than one object in the box, they are all the same thing)

It is one of the kids favorite labs of the year.

Pennsylvania. Downingtown Area SD — but it’s a private school.

I currently have 'issues' with Bounty. Yep. That 'quicker picker upper' is on my list not to be on my grocery list. Why? They have started running a trully lame commercial w/a 'idiot' type dad and a smart a$$ kid standing...looking at a spill on what looks to be a $8,000 hardwood floor, situate in a 100k kitchen.. Dad sez its a 'three sheeter;' the kid sez 'four' and background mom comes to the rescue with only one sheet of Bounty. There by cleaning up the dad/son mess. I find this disturbing for some reason...so for me its ScotTowels...(the Brawny guy offended my sensibilities previously.)

Now arent' you glad you decided to post to me and give me this opportunity to opine on paper towels?!?!?!?

He he. Got a kick out of your post. Never saw the commercial. I don’t give commercials much notice. I just know what I like and I HATE Viva, don’t care for Scot, and only use the cheapies in my laundry room and places where I just need to quickly dry my hands. I think Scot works well but I don’t like the feel.

They should get US on a commercial.

Thanks. Just had lunch with a good friend today and asked her how her school works out the supplies. She is in the Cleveland school system. She says each child’s own supplies stay in their desk. The only thing that is shared are the tissues and the wipes, which she says they run out of very quickly requiring her to buy them with her own $.

Forgive me for being dense but what is a “triple beam balance?”

Stopped reading this drek propaganda right here. If you believe that our teachers are so horrible, become one and do it the right way.

I retire from the Military in three years. I might go into "Troops to Teachers."

I had previously considered working for the bomb squad but I wanted to try something reckless and dangerous.

It is a balance that has three beams. The outer most measures in 100 gram increments, the front measures in 1 gram increments, and the center measures in 10 gram increments

Thank you very much for the explanation. Is this something that is already in the lab/classroom?

Oh yes, each year our science dept buys two of them.

We now have about 15 of them. Enough for a classroom of 30 kids.

They run about $120 each.

BTW, what grades do you teach for science? I’m planning to become a science teacher for grades 4-9. I have to pick two fields, required in Ohio, so I’ve chosen language arts and science.

I teach four units of 7th grade science. In our school, 5th graders are given an overview of the sciences (astronomy, biology, earth sciences, physical science).

6th graders are introduced into Earth Science

7th graders are taught biology and 8th graders are taught physical science.
