Russia-Georgia reaction: world leaders condemn Moscow
Times ^ | August 10, 2008 | Jules Cavendish Online

World leaders have condemned Russia’s attacks in South Ossetia, warning Moscow that failure to withdraw risks damaging international relations.

The White House said Russia’s military action in the Georgia was “dangerous and disproportionate” and that any further escalation of the conflict could harm bilateral ties.

“We have made it clear to the Russians that this will have a significant long term impact on US-Russian relations,” Jim Jeffrey, deputy National Security Adviser, said.

In Britain, a spokesman for Gordon Brown said: "We are urging an immediate ceasefire to the fighting in South Ossetia and calling for a resumption of direct dialogue between the parties."

Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign minister who has been dispatched to the region by President Sarkozy, forecast a Balkan-style war if neither side backed down. He said that such violence was “unacceptable at the doors of Europe” and reminded him of “other recent conflicts that have torn our continent apart”.

John McCain, who has made foreign policy the centrepiece of his campaign and been a constant critic of Moscow, said: "Tensions and hostilities between Georgians and Ossetians are in no way justification for Russian troops crossing an internationally recognized border.”

Obama accused Russia of escalating the crisis “through it's clear and continued violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity” and called on it to stop its bombing campaign.

Former Soviet bloc countries also rallied to Georgia’s cause. Polish President Lech Kaczynski said interference in domestic Georgian matters was “unacceptable and could lead to tragic consequences".

According to one story, a Putin drone in the German foreign ministry came down on Russia’s side, but Merkel had a different position. Makes you wonder if there isn’t a terminal sickness affecting all the foreign diplomatic corps in the northern hemisphere.

BTW, my Tivo wouldn't record the new season of Dr. Who for me this year. I'm thinking it was a Darlek plot.

The Russians are starting to get me concerned - they are starting to act like their old selves (circa 1989 / Afghanistan), and we'd better start drawing the line in the sand - right across the FLA straits...

D-a-l-e-k. And Daleks aren’t that devious. Heck, they have trouble climbing stairs. It’s most likely the Master’s fault, especially if you end up strinking yourself or someone else with your tivo remote.

I’ve been following it, but I havent’ had anything to post.

After all, this is about an oil pipeline. Russia is basically taking it over and daring someone to do something about it. The Euroweenies don’t have the balls, and we don’t have the money or resources.

So, there we are. Whether we’re outraged or not, we’re impotent. A leftist’s wet dream, and all we can do is vote for one liberal or another.

My thoughts also. I hoped things were different, but now I am starting to hate them again.

Yeah, its like tune out..I almost thought I was on a Libertarian site.

I wish the Georgian Presdient would go n Fox news!!!
But he is able to get a lot of points across!

this is not important to a lot of Freepers maybe cause they mistakenly believe ‘we don’t have a dog in this fight.”
Yeah, right.

What happened to supporting our allies. what happened to supporting a Christian nation against communists?

Now they have more stupid women anchors on CNN who don’t have a clue...and Wolf couldn’t even pronounce Ossetia even after the Georgian President corrected him.

Russia is using the same rationale as the US when it attacked Serbia and backed Kosovo independence. Russia warned many months ago that the Kosovo precedent was dangerous and could be applied elsewhere. This should have been no surprise.

If you want intelligent analysis, get off Free Republic and go to the Belmont Club. There have been two amazing articles there by Rich Rodriguez (Wretchard) and the comments on the first version ran to over 150 “rationale” comments.

I thought I heard that Germany came down on the Russian side.

They did, but Germany is being held hostage by Russian oil and natural gas. One false move and they freeze in the dark.

Not everyone has insight into this mess, I would bet money that the majority of Freepers are with Georgia on this. But what can they say? I think you and Halgr need to step back and realize that fact instead of moaning and gnashing.

The fact of the matter is that the US is fairly impotent on this issue other than strong words and selling of Arms. If anything backs the Russians down it will be former satellites ganging up together and sending in their own troops.

thanks for your response.

Sometimes I moan and gnash...this is one of those times.

I realize your observation and it is very accurate. I guess my frustration is really with the europeans, and they dissapoint me again and again...but that’s not new. And sometimes the planet is just difficult. I do appreciate the freepers.
