The Pipeline War: Russian bear goes for West's jugular

The war in Georgia escalated dangerously last night after Russian jets reportedly bombed a vital pipeline that supplies oil to the West.

After a day of heightening international tensions, Georgian leaders claimed that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which transports oil from the Caspian Sea to Turkey, had been attacked. But it is thought the bombs missed their target.

Their claims came after Russian jets struck deep into the territory of its tiny neighbour, killing civilians and ‘completely devastating’ the strategic Black Sea port of Poti, a staging post for oil and other energy supplies.

Georgian economic development minister Ekaterina Sharashidzne said: ‘This clearly shows that Russia has targeted not just Georgian economic outlets but international economic outlets as well.’

The pipeline is 30 per cent owned by BP and supplies 1 per cent of the world’s oil needs, pumping up to a million barrels of crude per day to Turkey.

Vladimir Putin & Nancy Pelosi agree on US oil policy.

America should have less oil. Somebody has to "Save the World" from global warming...

i was just thinking how ironic it is that the world’s energy is so influenced by putin, chavez, morales...all of socialist stripes.

meanwhile, back at home our democrats are on a similar track.

Yep, somebody has to “save the planet” and San Fran Nan decided it might as well be her. We certainly are blessed.

In a strict military sense, does Georgia have any chance against Russia? They seem to have done a surprising amount of damage, up to downing planes and taking out tanks. Anyone know?

Although 1% isn't much the psychological effect of Russia cutting this line would drive up oil prices again. Is that what Putin wants?

They have no chance against Russia.

However, they can bloody their noses badly and show Russian military and equipment to be mediocre at best. They don’t need their military sales in the tank. All they have is basically oil and military equipment.

It will be interesting to see what Ukraine does here. We can make life miserable for the Russians in a number of places if the want to play Cold War games.

In the short run, they don't have a prayer. In the long run, Russia cannot sustain the death of a thousand cuts their forces will likely endure should they attempt to annex Georgia. The Caucasus is an area where wars have been fought incessantly since the dawn of time.

“Is that what Putin wants?”

Russia makes a ton of money on oil exports. The higher the price, the more money they make. They can go into Georgia and start to project power again in part because of their oil windfall.

Putin wants the profit from a captive European market.

However the Snake does not play softball.

The US did exactly this to the Serbs over Kosovo, for the same reasons, economic control. Russia objected, and was told to shove it.

Now the shoe is EXACTLY on the other the other foot and Putin is going to show the US what $200 oil will do to the economy. If we shut up and applaud Georgia sinking like Serbia, then the pipeline will be quickly restored. If we don't, we'll be competing with Russian Mafia/business who will be buying their oil at $8 a barrel.

Putin, Chavez, the Arabs, and a lot of Nigerian rebels are making our point for us - that it's stupid to rely on foreign oil imports for our energy needs. We need an uninterruptible energy supply.

Drill HERE. Drill NOW.
