The family of John Edwards' former mistress, Rielle Hunter, is challenging the former senator to take a DNA paternity test after his claim that he did not father Hunter's six-month old child.
In the first reaction from Hunter's family, her younger sister Melissa told ABC News that Edwards should immediately follow through on his pledge to take a paternity test.
"I would challenge him to do so," the sister said. "Somebody must stand up and defend my sister," she said. "I wish that those involved would refrain from bad-mouthing my sister."
In his interview with ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff acknowledging the affair, Edwards said he knew the child was not his because of "the timing" of the pregnancy and the affair.
"I would welcome participating in a paternity test," Edwards said. "I'm only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one."
Hunter left her Santa Barbara home earlier this week in advance of Edwards' ABC News interview.

Sounds just like John Kerry’s “promise” to Tim Russet on “Meet The Press” to release his SF 180.
"..she was the basis for the character Alison Poole in his novel Story of My Life,.." "
"Alison Poole, "an ostensibly jaded, cocaine-addled, sexually voracious 20-year old."
QED
Now we find he lied about the timeline. And this thing drags out.
Exactly. Edwards impugns the mother of his daughter by saying that it was some other dude.
Ma, Ma, where's my Pa?
Telling ABC I'm a slut
Ha! Ha! Ha!
I do hope someone is looking out for the safety of the child. The mother strikes me as possibly a bit unbalanced.
I feel sorry for the poor child. People never think of the third person involved. The child is treated as a ‘thing’ or piece of evidence.
Sorry, I find it bothersome the way the child is referred to.
You speak as if paying a whore is better than being one.
Basically he said she was a tramp sleeping around with various men in his campaign staff. And that he bedded her without love.
He did. John Kerry Signs Form 180 to release military records
Can a court *order* Mr Two Americas to take a paternity test? And if he refuses can that court presume that he’s the father and order him to pay child support? I assume the answer to both questions is “yes”....but I ain’t no lawyer.
I am glad someone finally said it, but I am reminded of a scene from Primary Colors. The Clinton character is accused of fathering a teenager’s baby. When asked to take a DNA test he just relies on a friendly doctor and sends his uncle.
The fact is, even if he does agree to a DNA test I wouldn’t believe the results unless I personally witnessed the entire procedure, including the uninterrupted chain of custody of the samples.
This tells me that Edwards is upstream without a paddle ...there was no strategy involved in any of this he went out there with his “confession” and threw himself and all his family under a fast moving train ...taking lessons from Obama?
Well... her sister already is calling on John to "man up" and get a paternity test...
As I said, it takes two to tango. He was the one who was married with three kids, including a wife with cancer. You mean that he had no free will or control and fell under the spell of this temptress? Give me a break.
good point...the woman needs a lawyer ...hope she has saved some of Edwards money for one
She'll cooperate if she's certain...or even strongly suspects....that he's the daddy. The amount of child support he'd be ordered to pay if he was the daddy would be comparable to winning the lottery for most women. The guy's worth *millions*.
The mediaWHORES will do to Rielle what they did to Paul Jones. I watched a snippet from CNN sorta defending SILKY that it was so preposterous and sickening! They are out to destroy her ala Jones and Flowers. OH BUT IT BE A Republican all HELL would broke loose with the clymers! Rielle better get herself a good lawyer and a PR PRONTO!
I agree with you & feel bad for the baby.
