Old media dethroned
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 9, 2008 | Tim Rutten

When John Edwards admitted Friday that he lied about his affair with filmmaker Rielle Hunter, a former employee of his campaign, he may have ended his public life but he certainly ratified an end to the era in which traditional media set the agenda for national political journalism.

From the start, the Edwards scandal has belonged entirely to the alternative and new media. The tabloid National Enquirer has done all the significant reporting on it -- reporting that turns out to be largely correct -- and bloggers and online commentators have refused to let the story sputter into oblivion.

..., reporting that turns out to be largely correct, ...

Reporting that turned out to be completely correct. They still can't give full credit.

The Enquirer also brought the Jesse Jackson affair into the light, I believe.

Let us not forget that MSNBC broke into regular programming to report the allegation that John McCain had an affair with a campaign worker even though the evidence was flawed and turned out to be false.

Bias, incompetence and the abandonment of journalistic integrity are the norm for today’s MSM.

Thank you, O steadfast Guardians of Truth. Thank you for your endless, selfless service in the employ of the manipulators and social engineers who would recreate the world after their own image. Thank you for betraying the high ideals that your craft could embody, in favor of paltry, elitist visions unworthy of a minor estate.

Die a well-deserved death, you has-beens. No more are you the media of record.

Most of the gloating I see on FR at the troubles of the MSM are wishful thinking.

After all, it wasn't the the new media that gave us a choice of John McCain and Barack Obama this year. I still think Hillary is in this thing and they might have been giving her cover from six months of scrutiny. We'll see.

Yep.

The old media are having a banner year.

They resurrected the McCain candidacy and then made him a nominee.

They created Obama from near nothing and made him a nominee.

They couldn’t have had a better year, if they had planned for it.

I don’t see the LAT much in these parts. I was wondering if he was a regular.

Tim Rutten hasn't said anything we haven't known for a long time. The MSM allowed its bias to get in the way of a good story. They knew but they didn't want to let the public know and it wasn't out of respect for Edwards' wife.

Every comment of excoriation ever made on Free Republic regarding the MSM has been verified from the inside in this piece. I wonder if the MSM is going to punish Mr.Edwards by doing some truthful, indepth reporting now that he has crapped in their punch bowl, on the 50 yard line, at the Superbowl, and then said to them,.."Yea, what of it." He is still lying to the MSM and they are just gossiping about it, not reporting on it. Why are we not seeing an army of journalists camped out in the front yard of Mr.Edwards. Edwards is hunkered down and the feckless, soulless, antiAmerican MSM is hunkered down waiting for their own personal Katrina passes, and they are sitting in a geological lowland, in a van, beneath the bridge, down by the river.

They are finished. They were given a place of prominence in the Constitution and went the way of the courts in the land. The resolved to forsake their august position in the Constitution for temporal, political perceived gains, and now their heads are on a pike and their offspring are being ravaged by people with electronic pitchforks. The people will have to do this themselves. They cannot rely on honesty of the MSM. They have devolved, and that gene no longer resides in the MSM genetic makeup. They have lost entire honesty chromosomes in a frenetic attempt swim through the fermented waters of political correctness. They lie, when the truth fits, and then tell the people they are too unsophistocated to understand "nuances of the issue". Free Republic has become the solar flare which disrupts their lies and sophistry. People. Just reasonable people, who the MSM think are to be politically euthenized by their barrels of ink. Well, here we are and don't give a damn about their barrels of ink. We have tens of thousands of computers, Mr. Robinson, and the desire to know the truth. We will not be denied by the New York Times, LA TImes, Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, or any other organization of liars who have now been proved to be just that,...then have the nutsac, like Mr.Schuster of MSNBC, to interview the Enquirer representative and show palpable disrespect, when it is he who refused the truth, time and time again.

The revelations are near completion. Dan Rather was just the first of their generals to fall. The war continued and now, like a MOAB detonated by one of their own, Edwards has killed the rest of them. It is a new day dawning. I hope we take back our country.

I’ll take it one step further. Why break the story the day the olympics starts as well as the start of a war by Russia?

Why did they wait until yesterday????

“Seriously, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: future generations will look upon citizens of the pre-Net era with the same pity we hold for victims of Pravda and other Soviet propaganda. “

Don’t become too complacent.

The Orwellian “Fairness Doctrine” is about building exactly that sort of state-run politically-driven media in America. And we’re about five months, from its first rollout, if Obama wins...

Don’t think it can happen to the internet?

Look at China.
