Bus company in fatal Sherman (TX) crash was operating illegally (14 dead)

The company whose bus crashed early Friday in Sherman was operating illegally, and federal authorities are urging state and local police to intercept any tour bus associated with its owner.

Iguala BusMex was formed just two months ago after another bus company, operated by the same owner, was barred from making out-of-state tours after a long history of safety violations. Those two companies both list addresses on Telephone Road in Houston and are led by Angel De la Torre.

Wasn’t that the bus company Liz and Richard used in The Night of the Iguala?

SHERMAN — As reports surrounding the tragic tour bus accident during the early morning hours Friday began to flow, questions aroused surrounding the tour company. Sherman officials on the scene Friday morning speculated that driver fatigue or a tire blowout might have been factors in the accident.

Angel Tours Inc., which was originally reported to be the carrier, was moved to “out of service” interstate status in June after multiple violations during safety inspections, meaning they were prohibited from carrying passengers outside the Texas borders. The violations included everything from burnt out lights and poor restroom maintenance to inconsistencies in drivers’ logs and insufficient tire tread.

....
....

The Texas and U.S. departments of transportation have not said if any impropriety or illegal activity occurred, and are focusing primarily on identifying the owner of the vehicle.

“The bus had a temporary paper tag on it like it had just been purchased. The VIN number that we received was taken off that tag so it was hand-written on. So that is still not positive ID of the bus, because of course numbers could be transposed,” said Christy Bird, Business Services Manager of the Motor Carrier Division for TxDOT.

However, Bird said she had learned for on-scene reports that the bus appeared to be a used vehicle that was resold. Officials are still working to find out from whom the bus was purchased.

Sad story. And in a town named Sherman too. :(

The motor coach carrier operated outside Texas without a Federal License. The Buses may be deficient but not foreign. The Bus Drivers may also be deficient in some aspect but there was no indication of them being undocumented!

There's some truth to that. Bus companies of that type usually have almost no Anglo passengers. They generally appeal to folks who aren't rich enough to afford to ride Greyhound.

Instead of harrassing Texas drivers for not having current car inspection stickers, it seems that TXDOT could take a look at all the Mexican bus lines operating out of Houston and So. TX. I’m fairly sure none of them have ever been inspected, though I probably sport fake inspection stickers.
During the evacuation for Hurricane Rita in ‘05, a load of elderly and infirm nursing home patients died in a Mexican-owned bus driven by an illegal alien. The brakes were so hot that they caused the gas lines to explode. You’d think that would have gotten the attention of the safety gurus in Austin, but apparently not.

And in a town named Sherman too.

Where I live, kinda sorta. At least on occasion, and we do own the house there.

I know the spot quite well. It shouldn't have been a problem *last night*, although a blown tire can happen anywhere and anytime. OTOH, in December or January, in the fog, coming off of a 4 hour drive, it can be a bit challenging. The road has a mild S-curve, and it's downhill approaching that spot, which is right where the last curve of the "S" ends.

Well this particular company, Angel, has been inspected 31 times in the last 24 months. And of course they found lots of stuff, most of it inconsequential. A few items did seem genuinely safety related though. Their permission to operate had been pulled.

What it looks like however is that the owner just started a new company which bought, or even just leased, the buses of the old company, and had applied for, but not received permission from the feds to operate intrastate. Pictures show no logos on the bus, whereas I've seen several "Angel Tours" buses on I-35 and US-75 (upon which the crash occurred. It's only been two weeks since I last traveled along that route, although I was southbound, northbound was a week and a half earlier than that.

(and yes, your President, Jorge W. Bush overruled Congress to allow Mexican truckers to drive on American roads in a pilot project...yes, the same Mr. Bush that fought for the life of Mr. Medellin, the convicted rapist/teen murderer against the State of Texas and Supreme Court’s rulings)
