STATEMENT OF SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS
August 8, 2008
Chapel Hill, North Carolina
In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.
I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.
It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up – feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.
And if you beleive that I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell! He was busted in a hotel 3 weeks ago with photos of him holding his ex mistresses baby, of course everyone meets up with their ex mistress to spend time with a baby that isn’t his!*sarcasim*
Ok, if the affair was over some time in 2006 and he confessed to his wife and family - what the hell was he doing at the woman’s apartment almost 2 years later holding her baby at 2:30 in the morning?

I increasingly am convinced that this statement is true of many if not most Washington politicians. This one of many reasons term limits are needed.

So his campaign finance manager paid her off, and he was in no way compliant? That passes the sniff test. Not.
If the mainstream media didn’t cover the John Edwards affair because it wasn’t news (since he was off the political stage), then they shouldn’t cover his confession because it wouldn’t be news now ...

I am sooooo sick of liberals. They lie, they cheat, they steal and yet people pull the lever to vote them into office (like Pelosi).
For me, I am so proud of Congressman LoBiondo of my district. The man is honorable and righteous. I only wish more Congressman and Senators were like him.

Then why, Mr.Edwards, did you find it necessary on July 23 to approach through dark side doors to enter the Beverly Hill Hilton and go to a room in Hunter's name, where you now say you were there to meet someone named Mcgovern (man) to discuss finaces of a now suspended political campaign? If you were meeting a man, why not have a nice relaxing dinner at high noon in the nicest restaurant in the hotel? Why run when confronted by reporters? What reason is there to cause a cursorial exit and end up blocking off the entrance of the door of a public bathroom? Now you give an excuse which simply is not believable. Tell the truth MR.Edwards. So far you have not told 99% of the truth. You continue to obfuscate, lie, offer sofistry and canards. This issue will not go away until the people know the truth.
What an appalling piece of s..t. I thought he implied somewhere in one of his statements that the affair was okay because he didn’t love her and that his wife was in remission at the time....
I hope our side plays as dirty with this quintessential Rat Politician piece of garbage as the Rats played with Marc Foley and which probably cost us the House and the Senate.
This guy is a freaking idiot! Every mature adult knows that a spouse that was cheated on would NEVER, EVER, EVER let their husband go visit “the bimbo” in some hotel room after the affair was disclosed and supposedly over. Joe Public knows this statement is KOOKERY!
He really confessed to something that Nat. Enq. wasn’t accusing him of doing.
They said it was recent and he was the father, that is what their evidence showed.
Why would he confess to something other than what the evidence shows....
I know she was in remission... he’s not the father... she knew about it.....
but I don’t think this is over he is just trying to save his political hide.
If what the enquirer is saying is wrong, he would have just said that.
It is like some petty thief being accused of robbing a old lady in 2007, and the thief says no I didn’t I robbed her in 2005.
Yes, NE appears to have more integrity than NYT and Washington Post.
