According to FNC (unless I misheard) there have been 1400+ deaths so far. Does that sound possible?

Yes, when the Russians wage war.

1400 deaths would not surprise me given the lethality of modern weapon systems.

The next 24 hours will determine Georgia’s fate.

Oh, it’s possible. The first article I saw quoted a Georgian saying she saw her village shelled. If that’s happening in more than one place - and I’m sure it is - the dead could number well over 1400 already. This is all very early, and uncertain, but it is possible.

The russians only have one military doctrine: Brute Force

Yes, easily. Over 7,000 Americans were killed at Gettysburg in three days, and at Cold Harbor the union lost somewhere around 5,000 men in one assault at Cold Harbor.

Given the SP artillery pieces I saw in those pictures, and MiG-23 and Su-25 “Frogfoot”, I would say “YES.” And the numbers will mount quickly.
IMHO, this was a really bad decision on the part of Georgia...

Does [1400 dead] sound possible?

Nineteen semiliterate Bedouins killed than twice that number using improvised stolen weapons. The British could have killed that many at the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Fortunately, they didn't want to. More than one pundit has pointed out that Ghandi was lucky his opponents were Britians and not Nazis. In De Bellico Gallico Caesar boasted of killing 140,000 Helvetians, men, women and children in one day.

Civilian causualities are almost always limited by the restrain of military leaders, not means at hand.

No offense, but only an American, influenced by the MSM's fantasy that nobody should be killed when militaries go to war, could find it alarming that large numbers of people die when ordnance is exchanged between combatant forces.

The truth is that if you are in the line of fire there is a good chance you will get wounded or killed without regard as to whether you are a combatant or not.

Russian sources claimed that the Georgians killed 1,400 S. Ossetian civilians in the first 24 hours.

That's almost certainly a load of crap.

The entire population of S.O. is only 70,000. That (1,400) would be 2 percent!
