My Party Should Respect Secret Union Ballots
http://www.freedomswatch.org ^ | August 8, 2008 | By George McGovern

Voting is an immense privilege.

That is why I am concerned about a new development that could deny this freedom to many Americans. As a longtime friend of labor unions, I must raise my voice against pending legislation I see as a disturbing and undemocratic overreach not in the interest of either management or labor.

The legislation is called the Employee Free Choice Act, and I am sad to say it runs counter to ideals that were once at the core of the labor movement. Instead of providing a voice for the unheard, EFCA risks silencing those who would speak. …

Some of the most respected Democratic members of Congress -- including Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, George Miller and Pete Stark of California, and Barney Frank of Massachusetts -- have advised that workers in developing countries such as Mexico insist on the secret ballot when voting as to whether or not their workplaces should have a union. We should have no less for employees in our country.

Card-check is a draconian measure that would expose anyone who votes against unions to intimidation. This Employee Free Choice act is no such thing. It is the establishment of Mob rule and intimidation tactics. At least some liberals, who fit the classic description, understand that expediency to increase their power is not a justification for stomping on the freedom of the worker. Unionization should not mean giving up your rights as a free man or woman. George McGovern is right. Someone should ask Obama about this.

Just more of the same. Left-wing thuggery and control. Something typical socialist libs should be exposed for....as if we did not already understand the organized crime and mob-tactics that unions are managed by.

George McGovern should realize that his party has moved to the left of him and that they have no interest in the freedom of the working class.

Wake up George, the Democratic party, largely as a result of delegate rules you helped impose in 1972, has become no longer concerned with ideology but with obtaining and keeping power. Nancy Pelosi doesn't seriously oppose oil drilling because she sides with he environmentalist crowd, but because no drilling gives her more power to create new programs, reward her political lackeys and above all extract even more taxes from the American people. George it's all about power and control not following some ideology or God forbid principles of individual liberty and freedom. You helped create a monster.

Funny you should mention unions, wholly owned subsidiaries of the Democrat Party.

OpenSecrets.org has chronicled the top 100 political givers from 1989-2008. The top 16 appear below. After the group’s name and cumulative dollars donated, the first percentage is donations to Democrats, the second percentage to Republicans.

One union actually gave 9 percent of its contributions to Republicans. It’s probably been called on the carpet for its apostasy.

1 American Fedn of State, County & Municipal Employees $39,392,153 98% 1%
2 AT&T Inc $39,065,076 43% 56%
3 National Assn of Realtors $32,336,506 47% 52%
4 American Assn for Justice $28,727,389 90% 9%
5 Goldman Sachs $28,701,957 62% 36%
6 Intl Brotherhood of Electrical Workers $27,898,934 97% 2%
7 National Education Assn $27,713,779 93% 6%
8 Laborers Union $26,503,339 91% 7%
9 Service Employees International Union $25,931,093 95% 3%
10 Carpenters & Joiners Union $25,627,582 89% 9%
11 Teamsters Union $24,992,064 92% 7%
12 Communications Workers of America $24,871,179 99% 0%
13 American Medical Assn $24,728,871 38% 61%
14 United Auto Workers $24,343,620 98% 0%
15 Citigroup Inc $24,271,821 49% 50%
16 American Federation of Teachers $24,113,243 98% 0%
