PHOENIX (AP) -- With one brief criticism of affirmative action, John McCain has brought new attention to ballot issues aimed at dismantling preferential treatment programs for women and minorities.
The question is whether McCain's support for one of those initiatives, in Arizona, will make any difference.
. . .McCain's comments also have drawn critics who pointed to comments he made a decade ago calling similar measures "divisive."

Blah blah blah as AP tries to shift attention from the real issue.

I have a black friend who opposes affirmative action. He says that, when a government uses affirmative action, that government tells minorities that they aren’t smart enough or talented enough to get a job or admission to a college, without government help. He says that all Blacks and Hispanics should be insulted and offended by affirmative action. When he debated another black man about this topic, my friend said, “If the government uses affirmative action, the country should be consistent, and all employers should use it. 12% of the country is black, so 12% of NBA players should be black.” The other man said, “No, only the most qualified people should play in the NBA.” My friend said, “That’s my point. Only the most qualified people should get any job. Why should we have a double-standard?” The other man couldn’t answer.

46.
We in Michigan (whatever our other faults) took care of it a couple of years ago, over our Canadian-born Goobernor’s objections.

The ballot initiatives in Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska call for amending the state constitutions to ban any hiring practices, university scholarships and other public programs that favor one group over others.
The only folks who deserve preference for anything are this nation's veterans.

I hope so. I attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from ‘92 to ‘96. My parents bought me a lifetime Alumni Association membership as a graduation gift, so I receive the quarterly magazine. I swear, for about 4-5 years, the pages were filled with nothing but diversity this, and diversity that. Plus the fight-to-the-death to defend their blatantly racist admissions policies, regardless of any court orders to stop. You can imagine the result every time they call asking for $$$.

You're friend is absolutely right. After the SC decided that it was legal to descriminate against whites and asians for entrance into medical schools, I only go to white or asian doctors or dentists. The reason is that otherwise, I don't know if the person got into school on their abilities or if they were not qualified to get in, but took the place of a qualified applicant because of affirmative action. And it's unfair to those that DID get in based on their abilities, but are lumped in with all the others that got a free ride because of their skin color or whatever else.

Why doesn’t the Colorado bill also oppose the trendy category of sexual orientation/identity?

Hey, if MICHIGAN can ban affirmative action in government hiring, then other states can too!!
The papers railed against it, our liberal governatrix won re-election but we passed it anyway!
Good luck!

Affirmative Action is nothing more than blatant racism sanctioned by government and sponsored by leftists.

Being racists does not solve racism. “Affirmative Action” is nothing but racism.
