Behavioral Approaches Overlooked in AIDS Fight
New York Times ^ | August 6, 2008 | Lawrence K. Altman

MEXICO CITY — While the world awaits findings from new AIDS prevention trials, millions of people are becoming infected because governments are overlooking studies showing that behavior modification works, AIDS experts said Tuesday.

Among the behavior modifications the experts cited: promoting safer sex through delayed intercourse and the use of condoms, decreasing drug abuse, providing access to needle exchange programs and promoting male circumcision.

But none of the measures alone offer a simple solution to preventing infection with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS, the experts said in a number of reports and news conferences at the 17th International AIDS Conference here.

Homosexuals are mentioned only in the last paragraph, and the one of "behaviors" that needs to be curtailed -- buggery -- cannot be named by the experts.

Reminds me of driving down Commercial Street in Provincetown after the bars closed. Dozens and dozens of homosexual men cruising(on foot) for “dates.”

Now they are having sex, reportedly, during the day in the dunes in full view of families walking along the tideline.

Old joke: “What’s the first thing you do when you drop your keys in Provincetown?”

Answer: “Kick the keys to Truro!”

Well, at least the NYT did a story pointing out that behavioral modification is what’s needed.

Abstinence works 100% of the time: a slightly overlooked statistic.

A woman I knew from high school works with a church sponsored AIDS prevention program in Kenya. Their approach is to sell abstinence before marriage and monogamy after marriage. In many parts of Africa monogamous marriage is not the norm and premarital sex with multiple partners is common ...both leading to a high rates of HIV infections and AIDS. If neither partner is infected prior to marriage and both remain in a monogamous relationship the probability of contracting AIDS is almost zero.

Another old joke that fits:

Q: What's the best way to avoid getting AIDS?

A: Sit down and shut up!

“governments are overlooking studies”
Governments are afraid of criticism from the radical activists.
This problem would go away if the behavior that leads to the disease is stopped.

The bottom line is that these people should have been quarantined back in the 1980’s. Like lepers. I know that they have rights, and now look what their keeping their “rights” has wrought.

AIDS was properly named GRID/the Gay Plague...and it still is. And the homosexual community does nothing but demand more resources be devoted to a cure. The cure is to isolate these people from the uninfected. Let them live out their lives, and when they die...the disease goes with them.

Someone here has a great tagline about he and his wife taking the aids vaccine offered by the Church.... sorry I can't recall who it is - maybe he will post here so he can be recognized!

Whoever you are, I love your tagline!

The AIDS lobby won’t be satisfied until they receive 100% of all tax money. Bush is a jerk for caving in to them.

It’s nice to see that they mention behavior modification.

AIDS rates would drop sharply if the voluntary risky behaviors behind it also dropped.

Yes, I remember that originally, AIDS was called the “gay cancer”, then was called “GRID”, which stood for “Gay something”. Eventually it was renamed “AIDS”, for Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, which left out connecting the disease to gays or any other groups. At one time, IV drug users sharing needles were identified as big culprits in spreading AIDS too.
