'Taking Woodstock' set to start
Emile Hirsch, Demetri Martin to star in Ang Lee pic
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Focus Features will begin production late this month on "Taking Woodstock," scripted by James Schamus and to be directed by Ang Lee.
Lee's ensemble cast includes Emile Hirsch, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber.
Pic is an adaptation of the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who played a role in helping the historic 1969 music fest unfold on his neighbor's farm (Daily Variety, April 22).
Less than a month ago, Focus had been thinking about postponing the start of production over concerns that a possible Screen Actors Guild strike could force a shutdown later this year. But numerous studios have begun to move forward on feature starts, and it's understood that Focus has worked out contingency plans in the event of a work stoppage.
Demetri Martin ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart") had already been set to play Tiber, an aspiring interior designer in Greenwich Village obliged to run the family business, a Catskills motel. In summer 1969, he found himself at the center of a generation-defining experience when he volunteered the motel to be the home base for Woodstock concert organizers after his neighbor, Max Yasgur, made his farm available for the event.
Staunton and Henry Goodman will play Tiber's parents, and Jonathan Groff (currently starring in the Shakespeare in the Park production of "Hair" in Gotham) will play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang; Hirsch will play a recently returned Vietnam vet, Eugene Levy will play Yasgur, and Schreiber is in talks to play a transvestite named Vilma.

a NEW CARTOON?.....
But, so did Woodstock.
even when they are geezers (a lot of them are already) this generation of idiots will still be fawning over themselves
What’s the big deal about Woodstock? It was a rock concert. So what?
Did the Hillary Clinton earmark for a Woodstock Museum get funded? The museum is open...it was highlighted on NPR.
After it was revealed that Hillary had the earmark it went silent.
And rightly so! Before the baby boomers, no one ever felt or experienced love or the sting of injustice, or cared about others, or recognized truth or beauty . . . . /s
A sad commentary on America’s youth in any era. I would be embarrassed to have accomplished so little and of so little worth.
Woodstock is almost 40 years old - get over it already....
The folks will never get over it. They are self-absorbed nitwits who get weak kneed at the thought of President Obama, and by some indications their kids might even be worse.
“but man did this portion leave a lot of damage”
...and their little red doper diaper babies are now crying for “hope and change”. Some with children of their own.
God help us.
So it won't be focusing on the young men with capital who paid for the concert and who were extorted by Abbie Hoffman and the Black Panthers to pay $10,000 in protection money (or "else") as well as giving them booth space only to see Abbie rush the mike during the Who's set (kerrrranggg!) and attempt to steal the film crew's camera gear (which was guarded but they wanted a fight when they tried to steal the rented gear).
Also somebody burned down the "capitalist pig's" burger stand (and we were told that there was only unruly arson at the 1999 Woodstock...).
NONE of this will come out in this flashback film.
There were much better 60s rock concert festivals than Woodstock.
We have films of some of them (Monterey Pop, Isle of Wight) and not of some of the others (Atlanta Pop Festival...).
“will play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang”
Lang did NOT organize Woodstock but he’s taken credit for it ever since.
He should also be blamed for the boondoggles of Altamont and of Woodstock 1999 which he was also involved in.
I feel sorry for baby boomers because they were so profoundly confused during their coming of age years and never recovered from that.
Of course they think they are sepcial - its part of the disease that has ravaged so much of that generation. Part and parcel of the smug and absurd attitude that no previous generation ever questioned the rules of society and culture prior to their generation. And what is absurd is not that they once thought this (all generations do), but that they STILL think this (most generations wise up with age, but the drugs taken by this particular generation seem to preclude their ability to be human in this regard).
Over twice as many people went to Woodstock as went to the concert that Obama appeared at in Germany.
And for all of the talk of Hendrix at Woodstock, barely 10% of the peak crowd remained to see Hendrix. And they weren't all at the stage. That was a generous appraisal of the “crowd” size. The cameras don't lie.
"Hey you kids! Get offa my lawn!!!"
Yes, a rock concert where 300,000 spectators tied up traffic for miles and the farmers as a result had to throw out crops because they couldn't get them to market, kids didn't bring enough food for themselves so the National Guard had to bring in food and clothing, plus the added fun of rolling in the mud and in your own sh*t because the toilets were overflowing....yeah, great fun....baby boomers be praised...
I’d love to see the Atlantic Pop Festival on dvd. Just seeing the Youngbloods and Lothar & The Hand People would be worth it for me.
But,I have to admit, I feel really silly watching how many of us once were. But some of the music I still like.
Maz Yasgur was a Jewish dairy farmer. Not too many Jewish farmers. Woodstock was set up in his fields I think
