Obama, in New Stand, Proposes Use of Oil Reserve
NY Times ^ | 8/5/08 | Larry Rother

LANSING, Mich. — Senator Barack Obama altered his position on Monday to call for tapping the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gasoline prices as he outlined an energy plan that contrasts with Senator John McCain’s greater emphasis on expanded offshore drilling and coal and nuclear technology.

In a speech here and in a new advertisement, Mr. Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, also sought to portray his Republican rival, Mr. McCain, as “in the pocket” of oil giants that are profiting from gasoline priced at more than $4 a gallon. And in his speech, Mr. Obama called for a windfall profits tax on oil companies to finance rebates for Americans.

At the heart of Mr. Obama’s proposals is a focus on fostering alternative energy development by investing $150 billion in emerging technologies and renewable fuels. Seeking to put a million fuel-efficient hybrid plug-in automobiles on the road, he said that he would offer a $7,000 tax credit to buyers, the overall cost of which he did not specify. In addition, Mr. Obama said his goal was to have 10 percent of the country’s energy needs met by renewable resources by the end of his first term, more than double the current figure.

You know this country is in BIG trouble when BIG government starts telling people how much money they are allowed to make. I hate Commies. Even when they call themselves “DemocRATS.” They are still Commies.

None of which is economically or technically feasible in the time frame the Oessiah promise. But once again, because the Oessiah says it, the Dinosaur media simply regurgitates it.

There isn't a single serious, viable idea in the Oessiah’s energy plan. Not one.

Take the Strategic Reserve. Use it all up. That 33 days of US imports. Ok, then what Democrats?

How come 700,000 million barrels in the Reserve can fix the problem but the 1,000,000 barrels a day for ten years we can get from ANWR alone cannot?

in 1978 Jimmy Carter and the Democrats created the Department of Energy promising to create Alternative Energy sources and get the US off Oil.

30 years, and hundreds of billions of dollars later, where are our Alternative Energy sources?

We need solutions that work NOW, not vague promises of a possible oil free utopia some where decades from now.

The Democrat leadership of today IS the Communist protest movement of 1968.

And the GOP of today is largely RINO thanks to an influx of Democrats who abandoned their party and and principles to the Leftists who overtook the machine.

Brilliant! This is “Manchurian Candidate”, “1984” and “Atlas Shrugged” all rolled into one. Next stop, “Animal Farm”.

Digging for diamonds wont lower the price of diamonds so, despite the fact that you have diamonds on your property, you shouldnt dig them out. Instead, when diamonds are at an all time high, buy your diamonds from a foreign source. Export as much money as humanly possible so foreign entities can buy up US landmarks like the Chrysler Building (and the mortgage on your house by bailing out the banks).
While you are busy exporting trillions to buy diamonds, work hard to make diamonds obsolete thru new technology. That way, all the potential trillions you have in diamonds of your own eventually becomes worthless as you let them rot in the ground.

The Reserve will yield just enough oil to manufacture replacements for the TIRES that will burst after being overinflated by the Obamatards.

Does Obama not understand what "Strategic Reserve" means? It means in an emergency, something to keep the USA running..it is not about lowering prices for the..what? 3 days a release would provide.

2 weeks we would have if the reserve was used under emergency conditions, but to play it out to save a dollar? I am appalled at his ignorance..

obama's gymnastics aside, I don't think you screw with the SPR unless there's something more pressing than high gas prices to deal with.

A complete supply interruption, world war, or some such might justify it.

Hey, Obamorons, some of the oil companies are American too (and part of your pension fund's portfolio)!!

What’s so dumb about advocating use of the strategic petroleum reserve is that, yes, it might result in some intermittent, temporary downward pressure on crude prices.

BUT, unless they plan to no longer have a SPR, what happens when they start to replenish it?

Haven’t heard Obama or Pelosi address that, unless they just plant to do away with it (probably illegal to do that).

Didn't Clinton use the strategic oil reserve?

And didn't we find out afterward that the strategic oil reserve is specifically to fuel the military and provide for emergency preparedness in case we are attacked and all of our oil supply is cut off?

Not a concern—the election will be over by then.

Yup!

Lets use up the Strategic reserves just ahead of the the main part of the hurricane season and while a potential standoff with Iran that may affect oil flow through the Straights of Hormuz is brewing..

Excellent strategy....

F@#king moron..

1. The Strategic Reserve is intended to cushion the blow of a sudden cutoff of supply due to war or natural disaster, so that we are not left defenseless.

2. BO’s promulgation of the idea of confiscating the revenues of a private company to redistribute as the government sees fit means that he is no longer to be suspected of Marxist tendencies merely because he has surrounded himself with Marxists all his life. This is a clear in-his-own-words expression of Marxist ideology, and the American people need to be hammered over the head about this. What he is suggesting should be made very clear: Your grandfather who saved money rather than buying a better car, nicer clothes, a bigger house, plasma tv’s, etc., and who invested that money in a petroleum company should be deprived of the income on that investment, so that Barack Obama can give that money to people who did not save and invest prudently. Profit drives innovation. Innovation drives growth. No growth, no economy. He should be getting creamed for this!
