House Republicans Continue Vacation Protest (Freedom's Watch Targets AWOL 'Rats With Ads)
The New York Times ^ | Tuesday, August 5, 2008 | Carl Hulse

Posted on 08/05/2008 7:30:47 PM PDT by kristinn

House Democrats are not just hearing about offshore drilling from Republicans who have taken over the House floor for a recess revolt; the conservative advocacy group Freedom’s Watch is going up with radio and TV advertisements against Democratic candidates in a dozen races around the country.

The ads, scheduled to be aired beginning Wednesday against incumbents seeking re-election and Democrats vying for open seats, echo the theme Republicans are sounding on the floor: Democrats left town for August without allowing a vote on lifting a ban on offshore oil drilling.

“No to offshore drilling. Yes to a vacation for Congress,” said the script for a television commercial set to run in the district of Representative Nancy Boyda, a freshman Democrat from Kansas. The ads are mainly radio spots and the group would not reveal the amount it was spending on them. Besides Kansas, another television ad will run in Houston while radio commercials will be heard in districts in Louisiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Missouri, Ohio, Idaho, New Mexico and New York

Democrats are dismissive of the Republican assaults and consider the ongoing display on the House floor a sign of desperation by Republicans anxious to hide their own records on energy.

“While a very small band of your colleagues remain on the House floor to discuss gas prices, their constituents deserve to know why their representatives in Congress have failed to support serious, responsible proposals,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote Tuesday to Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader.

“These proposals would increase supply, reduce prices, protect consumers, and transition America to a clean, renewable energy independent future. Americans deserve real solutions, not rhetoric.”

It looks like everyone is going to need a tire gauge to hold them over until the ‘RATS come back to work.

This is great! Further ads may point out that it doesn’t matter what a Democrats think about drilling because even if they are pro drilling it will be canceled by Pelosi. And Republicans should throw out a challenge! If the Democrat candidates for the House are pro drilling then why did they leave town? Why aren’t they joining the Republicans in a bi-partisan effort to demand a debate?

And John Boehner wrote back to Bela Pelosi:

''Madame Speaker, I could not agree more with you that the American people want real solutions, not rhetoric.

''Please inform me, and indeed all of America, when you plan to cease your tiresome quasi-Marxist rhetoric and actually offer a real solution.

''Thank you for your consideration in this matter.'' s/ John A. Boehner

Well, we can always wish, I suppose...

We need BIGGER tire gauges. I mean, tire gauges the size of those preposterous pepper mills they haul out in restaurants, the ones that need two men to operate safely. I’m thinking of something you’d have to carry on the roof of your car, with Barack Obama’s name all over it, and that fatuous logo of his. Maybe we also need squadrons of “Tire Gauge Guys”, modeled after the New York “Squeegee Guys” of yore. They would move around in traffic, pouncing on the unwary and underinflated like warrior leeches, plastering stickers on cars that say “I’m a Blue Meanie”. Of course, you could buy them off if you showed them a Democrat Registration or a receipt for an Obama campaign contribution.

” Anyone know what Nancy’s solutions were? “

Anything that wouldn’t actually work would be allowed. Especially if it requires dumping billions from oil companies into perpetual motion machines. Any action that might place the country’s ability to defend itself in jeopardy in the event of a sudden (oh, say, Iran-related) interruption in global oil supply, like depleting the SPR, would also be greeted favorably.

I actually thought the letter was serious - ya got me.

I’m VERY happy some repubs are finally demonstrating they have balls. It’s about time and long overdue. Now if the media would just start putting out honest news ....
