Bush Won't Call for Special Session From the Department of Unsurprising News comes this dispatch: President Bush will not call Congress back into session in August to hold a vote on opening more land to oil drilling. As they have been giving speeches on the House floor during The Phantom Session (come on, wouldn't you buy this T-shirt?), House Republicans have also called on Bush to use his constitutional authority to bring the chamber back into session to confront the drilling issue. But White House spokesman Tony Fratto says that's not happening; he points out that even if Bush brought the House back, he couldn't force the majority to schedule a vote.

No, that was Al Gore at the 'Rat Convention in 2000.
You gotta have your priorities; China.
I don’t know why ANYBODY was holding out hope for Bush to all of a sudden grow a pair.
Even if she gavels the session open and then 10 seconds later gavels it closed, Bush should call her on it and make her do it for the symbolism. At least it would show that he cares that the Republicans still trying to fight this insanity are appreciated. He should do it because he must.
So...all of the brave GOP congressmen are there, fighting for us, with the lights, camera and sound off; looking for support and getting it from the people they serve—BUT NONE IS COMING FROM THEIR PRESIDENT!
I hope Bush changes his mind on this after he returns from the Olympics. Perhaps he just wants all of them to stew for a while while the voters get angrier and angrier.
It was? Who was he saying to go where?
It was in reference to the GOP, while we still held the Congress after the impeachment. An appeal to the great unwashed masses to vote out the Republicans as payback.
And this surprises you because...?
Conservative, meet Bus.
It was neither. Bush himself said it at some point in 2000.
His puppetiers told him what to do.
This is one reason I am glad McCain is distancing himself from GWB!
The last time a President forced Congress back into session, was in 1948 when Harry Truman ran against the “do-nothing Congress”, and later won re-election.
Unfortunately, with Mr. Bush we have a “do-nothing” President, at least when it comes to energy!
But White House spokesman Tony Fratto says that’s not happening; he points out that even if Bush brought the House back, he couldn’t force the majority to schedule a vote.
“We don’t have plans to call Congress into session — it won’t make a difference if Democratic leaders are unwilling to bring up a bill for an up-down vote,” Fratto said, according to The Hill
Bush never heard of pressuring Congress? One of the greatest tragedies was when we got George W. Bush instead of Jeb Bush! Jeb’s IQ is at least 20 points higher as well.
I bet if they were trying to pass illegal alien amnesty, some free trade wealth-redistribution deal to some subversive nation, or freeing all the illegal alien criminals....Bush would be fighting to keep them at work!
Obviously Bush has joined the DNC....must have missed the news report on that
And, anyone thinking McCain is going to be any different...please put the crack-pipe down.
Stupidity is repeating the same mistake over and over again
The longer they are out of session the less damage they can do...... Maybe they should meet about 30 per year and stay adjourned the remainder...
I get the impression that the Bush Whitehouse isn’t going to do anything without running it by the McCain Campaign first. McCain is just starting to get traction against Obama on Energy. Sadly, I think the status quo helps McCain and so nothing will happen (until after the election). Enjoy those heating bills! (wince)
Here's the deal, she can't gavel it closed. Bush can't make her vote, that is true, but once he calls an emergency session he has the say so over when they adjourn, Nancy would not be able to close up shop. The rats would have to stay there instead of going on a 5 week vacation. Thats is the beauty of it and why it should have been done. I think she would have been pressured into voting by the other rats who want their vacation.
