McCain gets loud welcome at Sturgis bike rally (prefers Harley roars to Berliner cheers)

STURGIS, S.D. - Thousands of motorcyclists greeted Republican presidential candidate John McCain with an approving roar Monday as he sought blue-collar and heartland support by visiting a giant motorcycle rally.

"As you may know, not long ago a couple hundred thousand Berliners made a lot of noise for my opponent. I'll take the roar of 50,000 Harleys any day," McCain said, referring to Democrat Barack Obama's recent visit to the German capital.

McCain played to a crowd that paused for a veterans salute. He criticized Obama for supporting a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq while opposing efforts to reduce record-high energy prices.

"My opponent wants to set a date to come home. I want us to come home with victory and honor so we will never go back again," the Arizona senator said.

McCain also criticized Congress for adjourning for a five-week recess without approving a new energy plan.

"Tell em' to come back and get to work," McCain said, yelling into the microphone. "When I'm president of the United States, I'm not going to let them go on vacation. They're gonna become energy independent."

I do not doubt the Independent Conservative I vote for, and as against and opposed to the two sides of the same coin McAmnesty and Osama, will also not be perfect, yes. There is imperfection. But it will in fact be a vote the coming closest to the ideal, my ideal, and for me, it is for Conservatism and for the Republic. I will strive for the best man and the best platform that I can vote for, whom is guaranteed for me as a choice on my ballot. To those electors pledged to said candidate, who will necessarily be a conservative and not a lib or a phony, will go the 2008 Presidential vote of one AmericaninTokyo.

These politicians would attend meetings with freakish religious cults if they thought enough would attend, was popular, and they could get some votes.

These people go from La Raza clan meetings to biker rallies. They'd pander to any group for a vote.

Did he get his picture taken on Harley yet? Did he look cool?

Blind dumb sheep come to mind.

I'm a conservative with a highly functional long memory as far as McVain is concerned. I know exactly what AminTokyo is talking about. The only way I'll be able to vote for this guy rather than a third-ticket is if there is an opposition team--"across the aisle" from this RINO--ready to resist his anti-conservative momentum.

I still can't believe the mess the GOP elites have gotten us into.

I see you are knee deep in the murk of sell out conservatives. Too many Republicans pretending to be conservatives nowadays, all driven by fear I spose.

re: I've said for the last year that if McCain wants my vote, he has to come to me, not the other way around. )))

Y'know, I throw out a bushel of McCain mailings every week. Honest--I get two thick envelopes a day!

He's ashamed of ugly ole conservative Republican me in the daylight, but in the secrecy of the dark mailbox he'll beg for money.

Not only will McCain have to come to me--he'll have to COME TO ME IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.

He's ashamed of us and hates us--but he'll beg for conservative money. And who does he think will knock on the doors and get out the vote? Moderates?

Let Cindy give him money. She's rich enough.

Thank you for your magnanimous, kind, if not somewhat patronizing but forgiveable epistle

I was just getting irritated about those guys slamming on you without taking the time to check who you are. Its lame.. and once I decided to get into it.. then I felt I had to include you on the note.. which from the tone could be irritating.. but it was meant for the slammers who need to learn a bit more politeness or at least dig a bit before opening mouth and inserting foot.

I agree with their position for the most part, but on seeing your post, I just decided to let it be as you were entitled to your opinion and you are able to support it with facts. Thats all I ever ask.

If you were posting this in every thread about McCain and making it a big deal, I would be all over you just the same.. but this is the first time I saw this posted and it reminded me of my own issues with this man, but, honestly.. I have let some of that go as water over the dam. If he lets go of Cap and Trade, and the Global Warming hoax, and moves toward ANWAR I will be pretty whole hearted about him. For now, I am more enthusiastic than the "Lesser of Two Evils" bunch but still concerned.

On the Vietnam thing, I believe there are things I don't know about this issue. Its hard to imagine anyone who would more appreciate the situation of Vets left behind than McCain. So you have to go to what possibly could be his reasoning for his actions. Its hard to find a gain for him in this.. so who or what is he protecting comes to mind. And, this guy is most likely to be doing something to protect something worthy than not, its just his character. He is a pain sometimes because he gets a wild hair and seems to be protecting the wrong thing, but he has always been earnest about it, at least as best as I can tell.

“My motive is to peel away as many votes as I can in a Conservative forum for a Conservative cause and candidate.”

But the thing is, Bob Barr is not a conservative candidate. He is a ACLU-collaborating terrorist appeaser.

“I dont need to pry or peel Obama supporters off to go Third Party Conservative, because a) they are not my target, they would not listen to me in the first place because they are liberals/leftists. That is Nader’s people’s jobs; and b) they are not on this forum to begin with.”

and c)They share Bob Barr’s vision of surrendering Iraq to the terrorists, and they intend on voting against McCain anyhow.

“Only undecided GOP voters who cannot stand McCain and are still fence sitting, are susceptible to coming home to Conservativism. I get more and more of them Freepmailing as the days go by.”

You get compliments from other Ron Paul fans. So what.

“That is my mission.”

And my mission is to point out that folks like you support isolationist candidates like Bob Barr and would rather see Obama win than McCain, so you flood the threads with silly messages claiming McCain is evil and trying to convince others not to vote for McCain, knowing that Obama will win if McCain loses.

“Oh, and another thing. As a nine year shareholder of FR, the INDEPENDENT CONSERVATIVE FORUM (i.e. it is not a Republican Party forum) that last thing I want to see it become is RINO, a cultic worship of John McCain”

You’ll note that your goal is opposite of the founder’s goal : “I’m not excited about McCain, but we’re going to have to do all we can to block the America-hating Marxist Osama Obama from gaining control of the most powerful office in the world!!”-Jim Robinson
You’ll notice that a vast majority of conservatives are now backing McCain, both here on FR and the high profile conservatives like Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson, and Tom Tancredo. The isolationists back the kook candidates like Ron Paul, Baldwin, and Barr.

Exactly. Their inability to give a strait answer shows that they don’t have much confidence in their debating skills. I remember these Ron Paul people in ‘04 during the Bush/Kerry election. They came in with their left-wing taking points on foreign policy and they’d lose miserably.

Can anyone picture Obama addressing this crowd?

He could tell them "I am the one you've been waiting for." Wonder what the response to that would be.

Good one! This, along with McCain's strong "Drill here, drill now" comments yesterday, make me think he's starting to run a smart campaign.

He is a non factor.

On planet Earth he's a very real factor. You may have heard that he's running for president. You can work towards how you wish things would be, but in the meantime you have to deal with how things are.
