Drill Through The Floor

Energy: House Republicans recognize that drilling for our own oil has become the issue this election year. Will the rest of the party join their crusade and use it to win in November?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have sent the House of Representatives on a five-week vacation, but Republicans have decided to remain in the sweltering Washington, D.C., heat, take to the in-recess House floor and demand that Congress be called back so that Americans can get some relief from high gas prices.

Led by Reps. Mike Pence, R-Ind., Tom Price, R-Ga., and Lynn Westmoreland, R-Ga., and fully backed by House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, this GOP attack could smack unwary Democrats as hard as the blast of a Texas oil gusher, because what Republicans are demanding is nothing more than a simple up-or-down vote on drilling for domestic oil in a Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

Pelosi and the House Democratic leadership will not give them a roll call on drilling because she knows what doing so would mean: Enough Democrats would vote with the Republicans to pass legislation opening up offshore areas for oil drilling and to allow access to oil shale in Western states.

That would be public proof that Democrats are out of step with most Americans on how to bring down gasoline prices. And so on Sunday, we heard continual intransigence from Nancy Pelosi regarding having a simple floor vote in which the people's representatives could decide whether to drill or not to drill.

The democrats will do whatever they can to ensure the oil prices do NOT drop before the election!!!

They know that high oil prices will help elect Obama and other democrats.

They are simply SHAMELESS!!

Think imagery here...roll a few oil drilling rigs into
Washington, D. C., park them around the Capitol building and threaten to drill right down through Pelosi’s office floor and the floor of every foot-dragging Democrat. Think of the TV coverage

Yes, well, it would have been nice had they thought about this a little earlier in the day, like maybe at the beginning of their term of office. But later is better than not at all.

Now that they've discovered that we need oil, and we need to be oil independent (I hope they've made that greater synaptic leap) they need to keep pounding this drum until the whole country sits up and takes notice. We need to drill, everywhere it makes sense to drill. We need to take note of who it is that keeps obstructing energy projects, like drilling, like pipelines, like oil-shale and power plants of every kind, and vote these people out of office.

There is enough oil and shale and coal to make us completely independent of oil imports, which would make a difference of almost a trillion dollars a year in our balance of payments. Its insane not to do it. Its the kind of thing that should get you voted out of office and retired permanently from politics.

I disagree. High oil prices can be hung squarely around the neck of the democrats - where it belongs. Pubs just need to keep doing dramatic things to get the story out about drill here, drill now.

Nazi Pelosi refuses to budge on the issue
Besides she’s busy on vacation promoting her book
Let her know how you feel

Also, time to bring in the big guns, yep the “oil man” himself. Contact President Bush and request emergency session.

Santa Barbara Channel...drill here, drill now

Careful; they will drag out that 40 year old picture of the seagull covered in oil.

Why can't they find some newer pictures if offshore drilling is so dangerous?

I lived in Santa Barbara before the oil spill, and the beaches were ALWAYS covered in tar from the naturally occurring seepage off the coast.... absolutely ruined our bathing suits.

Removing all the oil from underground off the coast of Santa Barbara would stop the seepage and make the beaches cleaner.

I'm with you. My husband works for a major energy company in Ventura and we live in Santa Ynez. All the major oil companies are finally gone because of the way they were treated. Now there are smaller companies harvesting the oil but much to Santa Barbara's disappointment, the smaller companies are not able to comply with all the constant shake down.

When Chevron built the gas plant at Gaviota, they had to pay to build a new school, a new fire station and a desalinization plant just to be allowed to harvest the natural gas. They were still constantly hassled until they sold it off to a company that couldn't afford all the fines and so after very little operation the plant is being dismantled. The County of Santa Barbara decided they didn't need a desalinization after all plant was disassembled and sold to France without ever being used.

Meanwhile the natural seepage is worse than ever. Funny thing has happened in the last year or so; the baby-boomers who started and ran GOO (Get Oil Out) have been steadily losing popularity and more people than ever want to bring oil drilling back. The oil companies are in no rush to go back in there. Imagine.

Progressives have been demagoging on “Big Oil” since Rockefeller’s time. Of course those who have owned and operated the oil companies have profited “unfairly” from the production, transporatation and sales of oil. However, they —not alone of course-—have also made possible an abundant supply of a commodity that has built the most prosperous economy in the history of the world. Whatever injustice that has been done cannot be made good by political means, for the political process is as corrupt as the economic process. Socialists would have us believe otherwise, but history tells us they are wrong.
