One of Rush’s best song parodies.

Michael Richards had a sitcom that lasted 4 episodes, but there was one scene that I still laugh about.

He was in an electric smart car and was chasing someone through the streets, during the chase he turned on the radio to listen to it and the car stalled.

That pic of Rush reminds me of the scene and I start laughing again.

Rush:

“Is that the clutch or does this car come with an enema?
Who needs a windshield,my knees do just fine.
If I could lose twenty pounds,I can put it in fourth.
I don’t brake for butterflies,I run from them!
Step on the gas with your a..?
Why do the headlights look like a car caught in a deer?
Why does the horn go “EEEK!”
It’s called a smart car because when you wreck running into a squirrel,it and the squirrel won’t die.”

I saw one of these out on the freeway today. I don’t know how far he’d pushed the accelerator through the floor to get it to 65 mph, but he was keeping up with traffic.

Somebody where I work has one and I’ve stopped and looked at it. Like other folks have said, it’s not too bad room-wise for two people, but there’s no room for anything else. And as for safety, well, there’s a video out on Youtube of some show in the UK slamming a Smart into a concrete barrier at 60+ mph. The passenger cage held together, both doors could even still open and close smoothly afterward. Problem is, there’s no crush space, so the occupants would probably still have been seriously injured or killed from the deceleration.

Looks OK if you don’t plan on either GOING faster than about 20 mph OR being around any OTHER cars going faster than that speed.

Looks like it'll be a real winner in the northern climes as well during winter.............no thanks, I'll walk.

Smart’s are safe enough, even in traffic. There are several videos of Smart crash tests floating around on the interwebs, including one where they slammed it into a concrete barrier at 70MPH. The doors still opened, and the passenger would have walked away (the driver probably would have a broken leg or two, but that’s a minor injury for that kind of impact in ANY vehicle).

The thing is, Smart did away with all of that “crumple zone” BS and built the car around a real hardened steel crash cage. That cage is very rigid and does a great job at preventing intrusions into the passenger compartment. For it’s size, it’s extremely safe.

The downside? That safety cage is also extremely heavy, and the Smart weighs as much as larger model compact cars. Its mileage, therefore, is about the same as any other decent compact on the market. There’s no fuel mileage bonus for owning one. The advantage is simply that it’s small and easy to park.

.

A old VW Bug would crush that thing

Can you imagine driving on the thruway with an 18-wheeler passing you by?

Driving it on the Tappan Zee Bridge with a touch of wind blowing?

It’s very tall and short and probably has a narrow track - Top heavy and ultra light

Little front and rear “crush room” before the tires are impacted

They made some tiny cars in Europe - this will get the eco-liberals and Congress started on banning bigger vehicles - except theirs!

That would be a perfect commuter car for me. Most of my drive is on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. If it’ll do 55/60 mph I can keep to the slow lane and only worry about deer.

If they don’t cost an arm and leg, that is.

Rush Limbaugh, despite his new $500,000 deal, has been observed 'bumming' rides from the elderly during current gas crisis

They do get crap mileage — now. We’ve had the European version in Canada for a few years & it came with a diesel engine that got much better mileage (naturally). Mercedes changed the design for the U.S. market — the car’s now about 8” longer than it used to be, and only comes with a gas engine (at least in N. America). It’s about time for the U.S. consumer to start demanding diesel engines (in all cars). That way, the rest of us would be able to get them too.
