John McCain may turn to Virginia for a VP candidate
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 4, 2008 | Leslie Hoffecker

First came speculation that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine was on Barack Obama's short list for the Democrats' vice presidential nod.

Today, the Associated Press is reporting that John McCain's campaign has asked another son of the Old Dominion, Rep. Eric Cantor, for personal documents -- a pretty good indication that he is under scrutiny as a running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Cantor, 45, has racked up overwhelming victory margins from his Richmond district since he first ran for Congress in 2000. He serves on the powerful Ways & Means Committee and, as chief deputy minority whip, is a member of the House GOP leadership. As the only Jewish Republican in the House, according to the Almanac of American Politics, he has been in a position to reach out both to Jewish voters and, through his strong support of Israel, to his party's Christian conservative base.

Why else might McCain like him? Well, ...

Cantor is a prodigious fundraiser and serves as finance chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. His voting record in the House is solidly conservative -- more so than McCain's, according to several national ratings. And given that the veep nominee is often called on to take more pointed positions than the person at the top of the ticket, it probably doesn't hurt one bit that Cantor was labeled a "Bush attack dog" by the chairman of Virginia's Democratic Party during the 2004 presidential campaign.

If Virginia is a battleground state, then McCain is toast.

He needs to put a true battleground state into play: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado or Wisconsin.

Not even Florida should be a battleground state with the known antisemitic positions of the Obamessiah. Yeah, I know, he'll get more than half of the Jewish vote anyway, but these voters are Jewish in name only and the natural descendants of those who worshiped Baal and populated Sodom.

cantor seems to be a solid choice and i wont be unhappy if mccain selects him, but for strategic purposes, i hope mccain selects a qualified woman as his running mate.

These media “leaks” are so humorous. They are just doing this to gauge party and media reaction, and to loose any skeletons which may be lurking about for the “strongly considered” candidate.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

Yes, Cantor would be good. But he has to think strategic purposes.

I hate it has come to that, but it has.

Obama is already throwing race in, and white males aren’t a majority in this country. Everyone here may flame me and tell why I am wrong that this election is about race and gender. Two white males would almost make it too easy for the Democrats to point their finger. And sadly, alot would listen.

I have accepted McCain. I will vote for McCain. But I think he needs to looks at a female or minority as VP. Sad state of affairs though.

Cantor is a religious Jew. That's two minorities.

Alaska’s female governor- Sarah Palin.

She is pushing for drilling in ANWR and has like a 80% approval rating there. Of course if she leaves, there needs to be a good governor so it doesn’t change that.

I totally agree with you. I think McCain wins Va even if Obama wins 35 states. There is too many military, military retirees, and defense dept employees for Obama to win. This state is not really in play, but Obama will score a point if he has McCain spending time defending it.

People don’t really understand Va has not trended Democratic at the national level. Who was the last Democrat to win Va anyways? LBJ, right? If it’s real competitive there it’s already over.

Great! Pick some moron who no one has ever heard of because you're afraid of losing one state???????????????? Sheer genius! You better pick someone with gravitas who can take over for McCain because at his age he'll probably expire during his term were he lucky enough to actually win.

First google hit:

Celebrity means nothing. Everyone who know who Cantor is in one week.

McCain needs to shore up conservative base; Cantor would do it.

He also would be a good choice after one term of McCain.

i agree 100% with everything you said.

sarah palin looks attractive as a pick and as a woman, but i really dont think even if she’s offered it she will accept. she just had another kid and picking up and moving her family to washington doesn’t seem like something she would do at this point.
