I was on this replica when it was moored at Alexandria, Virginia several years ago. Magnificent, beautiful, but so small. Even in the captain’s cabin I couldn’t stand up, and I’m 5-10.

Yes, those old ships are astonishing.

But one thing they had in common with our latest high tech nuclear powered vessles is: nearly unlimited range, or at least range limited only by the amount of food they could carry. And consider, if they could find a remote island with fresh water and live turtles, they'd be good to go for months more. Broken mast? Find a tree...
