John Kasich for vice president?
Power Line ^ | July 31, 2008

Readers may recall that I'm a bit down on the prospect of John McCain finding a running mate who will do him more good than harm. However, one person who might fit this description is John Kasich. He was a popular nine-term Congressman from Ohio, a state Republicans desperately need to carry. And he's originally from western Pennsylvania, another key area.

Kasich seems to possess a blue collar appeal that his party desperately needs. To be sure, he was never a Senator or a Governor, but he held a leadership position in the House, serving as Chairman of the Budget Committee. He was also a key figure in passing welfare reform. Thus, Kasich would seem to possess credibility when it comes to economic issues.

Kasich has his own show, "Heartland," on Fox News. He's good on television and his performances reinforce my belief that, more than anyone else being mentioned on the Republican side, he projects an authenticity that will appeal to what we used to call "the common man."

Nope. Two words: Chandra Levy. Two more words: Gary Condit.

I’d hate to see a great man like Kasich be a part of such a cruddy liberal campaign. I suppose if McCain had terminal cancer and Kasich was the VP candidate, then I would be pretty psyched about it.

This would not be a bad choice. He’s acceptable to conservatives, but is not closely identified with Bush, which is a problem that Rob Portman has.

Great man? I surely don't think so. I turn off FOX whenever he comes on.

To be sure, I am going off of his performance in Congress in the mid 90's.. has he turned liberal?

Has he turned liberal...wishy/washy, squishy, let’s all come together and middle ground is all I hear from him nowadays.

I read it, Saw nothing at all about John Kasich. Are you confusing him with Joe Scarborough?

Dear library user,

From the post that you cite:

"How about the fact nobody wanted or wants to know about how Condit (now ex-US congressman) or John Kasich (now ex-US congressman) and Joey Scarborough (now ex-US congressman) all exited at about the same time of the investigation,..."

You realize, of course, that Mr. Kasich declined to run for re-election in 2000, and exited office in the first days of January 2001. He made his decision not to run for re-election sometime during or before 1999, as in 1999, he began his unsuccessful run for the presidency.

Ms. Levy disappeared in May 2001.

But the theory here is that he decided in 1999 or thereabouts not to run for re-election because of a future scandal that would break in May 2001.

And instead, he ran for president.

By the way, Mr. Condit left the House in 2003, AFTER the scandal actually broke.

The attempts to link her to Mr. Kasich appear despicable and pathetic.

That conservatives would pass along this kind of trash is absolutely disgusting.

I'm not linking Kasich and Levy, I'm linking Kasich and Condit.

Dear libary user,

“I'm not linking Kasich and Levy, I'm linking Kasich and Condit.”

False.

Here's what you said above about Mr. Kasich’s potential candidacy:

“Nope. Two words: Chandra Levy. Two more words: Gary Condit.”

You linked them both to Mr. Kasich.

Further, you cited a post that strongly implies that Mr. Kasich high-tailed it out of town to avoid the investigation into Ms. Levy's disappearance.

As the facts prove, that's idiotic, as well as an ugly, evil smear.
