Canada bus passenger stabs, decapitates seat mate

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Manitoba (AP) — A traveler aboard a Greyhound bus repeatedly stabbed and then decapitated his seat mate, pausing during the savage attack in central Canada to display the head to passengers who had fled in horror, witnesses and officials said Thursday.

How many more people have to die before we ban all knives in this country?

Knife-control now!

WeiGuangLi would be a Han name, but it doesn’t really tell all.

Uighurs mostly live in the Xinjiang Autonomous region in the far west bordering Kazakhstan . . . . Muslim backgrounds. There is a Muslim separatist movement there that the Chinese have to continuously keep in check.

“The attacker had a Chinese name. The victim was a Native American.”

So this makes it a racial incident?

I recall a black man once saying, “When two blacks get in a fight, it’s called a fight. When a black man and a white man get in a fight, it’s called a racial incident.”

Actually that guy did try enlist another person to help, but that person and everybody else ran, so buff ex-military guy followed. He did get back on the bus briefly later to see of he could help (quickly saw it was way too late) and was apparently involved in helping keep the attacker in the bus after the attack was over and before police arrived.

All it would have taken was 2-3 people to run headlong into the guy and lie/sit on top of him until they or someone else could get the knife out his hand or definitively disable him.

When did that happen and why? Did AP formally back down on its threats?

The young man in Utah that massacred people at the mall a few years ago was from Bosnia - who’d of thunk he was a Muslim, too, doing Allah’s bidding. So, we shall see.

Has the ban on AP been lifted?

Why?

It seems that by the time he had the head free to display, the attack was pretty much OVER. So I'm not sure "paused" is the correct term here. I guess he could have stabbed the guy some more after holding up the head, but I don't think it really would have mattered.

All it would have taken was 2-3 people to run headlong into the guy and lie/sit on top of him until they or someone else could get the knife out his hand or definitively disable him.

And while the first guy would probably get stabbed and maybe killed, the others behind him would likely survive.

So, if you want to be first, I'll follow right behind you.

By the time you figure out what is happening, that passenger may have been stabbed multiple times. You have to weigh the chance of saving them with the likelyhood you are going to get killed trying.

The main reason for intervening at that time would be to prevent anybody else from getting hurt. If everybody else is getting off the bus, and nobody is left to be killed, you would be risking your life to stop him after he probably already killed the guy.

So I don't fault anybody for fleeing. If he was trying to stab the bus driver, then I would have intervened, or if it was on an AIRPLANE where he might try to take over the plane.

BTW, an ex-military guy still might be no match against another man who has martial arts training and a knife.

No, it doesn’t make it a racial incident. I only posted that info because there was the usual speculation about this being a jihadi attacking an infidel.

Grab a suitcase from an overhead rack and hold it in front of you while running towards him. No need to run straight into the knife (thought the perp was so intent on stabbing his randomly chosen victim, that it’s not clear he’d have bothered to turn around if someone had been coming at him). And actually, a couple of people throwing suitcases and duffle bags at the guy should have been able to get him down on the ground.

I hadn’t thought about suitcases being in an overhead rack. Do they do that on buses? I’ve always pictured the luggage in the undercarriage bins. I’ve never taken a trip on a commercial bus line before.

From the article:

"He sat in the front at first, everything was normal," Caton said. "We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting. "He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn't say a word to anybody. He seemed totally normal," Caton said.

Presumably, given that there were overhead compartments, the perp's bags weren't the only ones up there. I would assume that large suitcases were in an undercarriage cargo space. While a couple of passengers pummeled the perp with bags from the overhead bins, other passengers could have been passing up larger suitcases for the follow-up offensive.

Obviously hindsight is 20-20. It's a lot easier to figure out what COULD have been done, while sitting at a computer reading an article about what happened, than to figure it out on the spot while you're watching a fellow passenger getting butchered. But I do think it's a useful exercise to think through as fast as possible, what could have been done. The more of us who read stories like this and think through what COULD have been done, and the more people who read other people's ideas about what COULD have been done, the better chance that the next incident will have one or more bystanders who quickly thinks through what CAN be done and does it (enlisting others quickly if possible).

I conduct such exercises fairly regularly as I go about my daily business. When I'm standing on a subway platform in NYC, where there have been a number of instances of crazies shoving somebody onto the track just as a train is pulling in, and other sorts of attacks, I check the drainage channel between the tracks. Is the channel deep enough at this point to lie down in while a train goes over you? Because that's generally a much better option than standing up and trying to climb back onto the platform before the train hits you. Is it deep enough for two people? IOW, if someone next to me is pushed onto the track (especially a child who probably won't quickly follow a screamed instruction to "lie down between the tracks!"), if I jump down and lie on top of the person, will we both be safe? If I'm in a taxi at a stoplight, I try to figure out what I'd do if somebody tried to break into the car at a stoplight, or (not really in NYC, where taxi drivers are pretty tighly regulated and screened) what I'd do if the the driver suddenly started taking me someplace other than where I'd asked to go.

We all need to be polishing our "Let's roll!" mindset at every opportunity.
