I’ve heard many a tale of a heartbroken 1st grader who had his “special” pencils, etc, that he picked out special with his mom and/or dad,

taken from him and put in the communal pile.

This would be the first lesson of socialism.
NEVER do/provide your best, because “the state” will confiscate it and “distribute” it to others who don’t provide their best (if they provide anything at all).

That's why we simply do not comply with these stupid 'requests'. The first day of school our son gets 1 (one) pen and 1(one) pencil.

We repeat that on down the list of supplies. Then we keep the rest in a drawer near where his backpack is placed after school.

At 13 he's old enough to replenish his own supplies as he needs to.

As far as what the school wants, well we ignore them.

Which in this case is the right thing to do.
