Bill would require paid sick days for most

As many as 5.4 million working Californians don't get any paid sick days - and they tend to be both sicker and poorer than employees who do receive sick leave, according to a report released Wednesday.

"The more you need paid sick days, the less likely you are to have them," said Dr. Rajiv Bhatia, director of occupational and environmental health for San Francisco and a contributor to the report.

Like the San Francisco law it's modeled on, AB2716 would require employers to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked by an employee.

The Socialist utopia marches on....
:::::::
Yes, and while Kalifornia is the socialist leader in new and oppressive socialist ideas, the Feds are just as bad now. Today I applied for SS and Medicare — never thought I would live this long but I did :-)

The sad reality about socialism in America showed its ugly head again when I found out that YOU ARE MEANS-TESTED to determine the amount YOU WILL PAY for Medicare benefits. This, in spite of the fact that higher wage earners are ALREADY PAYING THE BULK OF TAXATION OF ALL FORMS in America. The socialists of Washington are also MARCHING ON!!!! Redistribution of wealth, ala Karl Marx, at its best.

“...to each according to their need...”

They want to make it easier for people to never aspire to anything more than an entry level job.

I look forward to the boarding up of storefronts in that God forsaken city..... They will eventually feel the sting of lost revenue and the reaction will be to raise taxes on the populace....

So, now you have to pay the employee who is too stoned or hungover to go to work.

Great.

I don't see the problem; if sick days are required, the hourly wages should be adjusted downward to offset the cost of those days off.

When I started my career a long time ago, the firm paid an hourly wage for hours worked. The firm did not pay for holidays, vacations or sick days, but increased the hourly wage to compensate for those days off.

If this were an effort to allow a guy two or four weeks in the hospital for major surgery only and not sick-time at home...then most of us would be willing to listen to the idea. I’ve witnessed cases where we had a guy with back surgery and he was to be out for six weeks...the company said fine...here’s 50 percent of your normal paycheck after you use up your regular leave. If companies want to arrange something like that...where you pay into a pot and this is some kind of fringe benefit, then fine. But the idea of us sponsoring a bunch of folks to take 15 days of home sick LV a year....just won’t sell. You can’t trust folks.

Is it just me? But I have never had a job where there weren’t Sick Days as a benefit.

What they’re trying to do is head off companies who are trying to save money by shifting their salaried employees to hourly where they don’t have to pay benefits.

Congrats on making it this far. I am not that far away myself. If I had known that I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself. On the other hand, to be in the shape that I am, I am in pretty good shape.

"Not I", said the conservative.

"As many as 5.4 million working Californians don't get any paid sick days - and they tend to be both sicker and poorer than employees who do receive sick leave, according to a report released Wednesday."

Pure nonsense. Those that get paid sick time use it all and then some every year- at a horrendous cost to employers. Employees that don't get paid sick leave do not call in sick unless they actually ARE sick. Accordingly, employee records reflect that those with paid sick leave are "SICKER" than those without paid sick leave, and miss much more time at work, especially Fridays and Mondays.

It is rare when a person is on hourly wages. If you are paid by the hour, how can you be paid for hours that you were not present?

The problem with sick days is employees use them to take vacations or do personal chores.

I solved that by not having a sick policy and just paid my employees if they had to take a few days or a week off...no annual limit. They felt better because they knew if they did get sick, even beyond the normal 10-15 days, they were covered. I benefitted by them not abusing the policy.

The report was released by supporters of a bill that would require all California employers to provide paid time off for workers to care for themselves or family members.

oh DUH ! a report of made up facts verifying the supporters' position.

This is a wonderful idea. I am retired. Do you realize that, not only do I not get any sick leave, I don't get any vacation. This obviously has more of an impact on people over 60 who tend to be overrepresented in the class of people who are retired. Talk about blatant discrimination against a class of people.

As soon as I get back from the golf course and finish with my afternoon nap, I am going to call Nancy Pelosi’s office.

the actual breakdown isn’t based on healthy/not healthy.

look closer - it’s hourly workers vs. salaried (or by the job) workers.

pure madness.

I was hourly at Digital Equipment Corporation and ATEX. The sick day was based on the presumption of an eight hour day.
