I blame Bennigan's for my addiction to deep-fried mozzarella sticks. The craving still resurfaces regularly, 20 years after working in the restaurant and serving probably thousands of the little golden cheese sticks with a ramekin of marinara sauce.
News reports indicate that Bennigan's may be closing its heavy dark-wood doors for good today (we're not sure yet, but many stores are closed), and it's causing an unexpected tinge of sadness. Working part-time at Bennigan's in Topeka, Kansas, for about four years in the '80s helped me pay my college bills, taught me about the service industry and introduced me to the wonders of a menu made up of about six key ingredients and a good deep-fryer.
One of the perks of a Bennigan's job (or just about any restaurant job) is free meals. So it's safe to say that much of my college-era diet consisted of those mozzarella sticks, the fabled (and deep-fried) Monte Cristo sandwich, chicken parmesan, bacon and cheese potato skins and that fatal dessert, Death By Chocolate.
Snip
Maybe Bennigan's will get its financial act together and this one piece of faux-Irish-Americana will remain for future generations of deep-fried food lovers. In the meantime, does anyone know where I can find good mozzarella sticks?

But there is much joy in democrat party food naziville today, a purveyor of those evil mozzarella cheese sticks has gone out of business.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
The only reason she's still alive is being female and not smoking. A male smoker would have died long ago from this diet.
My doctor says I'm not getting enough fat and cholesteral, so he put me on the Fried Mozarella Sticks diet.
Bennigans went out of business because there food is crappy.
Chapter 7. Belly-up, as it were.
One of their other restaurants, Steak & Ale, is also included in their Chapter 7 filing.
I forgot about the Monte Cristo sandwich. Those were fabulous. I also forgot there ever was a Bennigan’s until I read this.
I hear they are closing here in Houston.
Seems they are all turning into Mexican restaurants in the Raleigh area. Just take down the shamrock decor and the Guiness beer lights and put up some sombreros and a few Corona beer lights... Ole!
LOL Are you sure you’re not in Texas???
What is wrong with people today?
Read the comments at the linked story.
Many people apparently are not content to just not patronize places they don’t like - they want to see them closed so others with different tastes cannot patronize them.
These are the same kind of people who want to shut down talk radio, shut up public speakers they don’t agree with and impeach the president because they cannot comprehend the written and spoken word.
In their spare time they campaign for greater tolerance and diversity.
Not as good as they used to be. They changed the oil to some heart-healthy, eco-friendly crap with a really low smoke point, and the batter gets soaked. The last one I ate there WAS the last one, I was tasting it for days afterwards.

The first and last time I ate at Bennigan’s, I ordered chili and the beef had an unearthly, gray tint.
You scared me there for a second - I thought you’d said Steak & Shake...
Lot’s of rumors about S&S floating around also...
Maybe so. I don't honestly know.
The one and only time we went there, there were two screaming children running between the tables and through the bar area, thoughtfully coming up to each table to scream in long, loud bursts at diners.
We asked for the manager, who eventually came, but said that there was "nothing" he could do.
Since the manager was disinclined to do anything when asked politely, we left before our order came, along with several other tables. In mass, with no planning, several tables got up and walked out.
So we have no experience with their food, since they did not provide an atmosphere conducive to eating it.
Butters on South Park will be crushed, though. "Oh Boy! Bennigans!"
There was a Bennegan’s in Syracuse, New York but it closed a few years ago. I used to go there occasionally when I was in the area. I enjoyed their food much more than Applebee’s.
