WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The House of Representatives was poised Tuesday to pass a resolution apologizing to African-Americans for slavery and the era of Jim Crow.

The nonbinding resolution, which is expected to pass, was introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen, a white lawmaker who represents a majority black district in Memphis, Tennessee.

While many states have apologized for slavery, it will be first time a branch of the federal government will apologize for slavery if the resolution passes, an aide to Cohen said.

By passing the resolution, the House would also acknowledge the "injustice, cruelty, brutality and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow," the period after slavery was abolished in which African-Americans were denied the right to vote and other civil liberties. The resolution states that "the vestiges of Jim Crow continue to this day."

Wasn’t it the FEDERAL government that went to war to STOP slavery?

Just before fighting broke out, the FEDERAL government, all three branches had endorsed and supported slavery.

The FEDERAL government went to war over something else.

Shouldn’t it be the Democrat party that apologizes?

Is it just me, or this part of a campaign to pave the way for an Obama presidency (i.e., a black president would help to “make up” for slavery)?

Ironic that the US government has become a slave to the black racist movement.

Idiocy deserves whatever it gets.

Since I had nothing to do with either slavery or Jim Crow, Congress does not represent me with this apology.

Tell you what, let’s just all make a nice donation to the United Negro College Fund, and call it a deal.

If I have to pay a portion of Reparations, and since no one in my family ever owned slaves, do I get 'slavery credits'?
'Cause I need someone to go to Starbucks and return the coffee I got this morning with grounds at the bottom,... I just don't have the time.

And following voice approval of this non-binding resolution, the House will take up the slavery reparations bill....

No sarcasm. The whole point of the apology is to serve as a prelude to reparations

Well, I guess since this bunch of fools has solved the high gas prices by having oil co. execs testify before Congress and has solved the collapse of the housing bubble by funneling $300Billion of our tax dollars to crooks and idiots, they now have time to pick the scab off the ancient wound of slavery, a result of CNN’s flatulent series “Black in America,” no doubt.

If Barry Hussein is elected and the Dems win big majorities in the House and Senate, one of the first priorities will be to make tax payers pay restitution for slavery, which no one has benefited from since 1865. As though the blood of the War Between the States and the $7 TRILLION spent on “the poor” since LBJ stuck us with his “war on poverty” hasn’t been enough payment for the sins of eighteenth century America. When will it ever be enough?

I am fairly certain that none of my ancestors owned and slaves, African or otherwise. Why should I pay for any “reparations” or other apology-oriented giveaways? All those people, on both sides, are long dead and gone. God will be the only judge of their actions................

A whole lot of whites died in a brutal civil war to help end slavery. The North won that war.

What’s next? The U.S. apologizing for Hitler and the holocaust?

As someone who had ancestors who fought in the Civil War, I’ll take my thanks now.

*crickets chirp*

Typical moonbat symbolism over substance.

Just like protesting it solves nothing.

Cohen a white Jew is in a hard fight here in racist Memphis. He won when countless black candidates diluted the vote after Harold Jr was beat by Bob Corker. The Ford machine is behind Nikki Tinker, and well Cohen it seems is trying to pull out all stops to prevent himself from being a one term wonder...

“When it contains profanity.”

Ahhh, I’ve seen that before, so I didn’t figure that was it.

Thanks for the clarification.
