Polls: McCain Competitive In MN, MI, CO
Sunny 102.3 FM / UPI ^ | July 28, 2008

National polls indicate likely Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is competitive with his likely Democratic challenger in the U.S. heartland.

State polls from Quinnipiac University and The Wall Street Journal indicate McCain, R-Ariz., is running head-to-head with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in Minnesota, Michigan and Colorado, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday. Minnesota is the site of the Republican National Convention and led by Gov. Tim Pawlenty, said to be on McCain's list of possible running mates.

His competitive showing comes while U.S. President George Bush has a dismal approval rating and most U.S. respondants in several polls say the county is on the wrong track, the Chronicle said.

"Either John McCain is an overachiever or Barack Obama is an underachiever," said Bill Whalen, a Hoover Institution media fellow. "Either McCain rises above Republican misery -- or Obama's not fully caught the wave."

Whalen said McCain's push on energy and oil drilling, standing pat on the Iraq surge success and talking about economic issues may be paying off. An NBC/Wall Street Journal national poll conducted July 18-21 put Obama 6 percentage points ahead of McCain, the same gap as a Gallup Poll conducted during a similar time frame.

I know that we conservatives don’t like Pawlenty. I know, I know, I know....

So this is a question about pure politics.

Does anyone from MN know, and can articulate intelligently, an answer to this question: Can Pawlenty deliver MN?

If so....then....I say put him on. Conservatives are already out of this election, but it is still critical to beat Obama. If Pawlenty helps on that, i say do it.

The Dems have succeeded in implementing the ONLY scenario in which John McCain could win in 2008. It’s absolutely a fantastic phenomenon.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised...

my cat could be Obama. LOL

What levelheaded American is gonna vote for a Socialist Racist Anti-American?

Now remember I said, “levelheaded American” which eliminates the Lefties & anyone who depends on the government for assistance...but that won’t be enough to beat McCain or anyone else for that matter!

While the Lefties have been aborting their offspring,
Conservatives have been multiplying like rabbits! BIG SMILE

I’ll have to see additional polling to believe that McCain’s advance in Minnesota is real. I wish I did, but at this point, I think its an outlier. Too much movement too quickly, in a state that has long since been a Dem stronghold in presidential elections.

Michigan and Colorado? Those results I definitely DO believe.

"Huh. Aren’t those kinda liberal states?"

`Kinda?' Michigan is home to the UAW, Minnesota's democrats call themselves the Democratic Farmer/Labor Party or somesuch and Colorado has a bunch of granola eatin' treehuggers and California transplants. If Senator McCain is competitive in these three states Senator Obama is in trouble. I detect the first rumblings of a landslide.

Pawlenty may help McCain in MN, but let’s not forget Romney can definitely help McCain in another crucial state, MI.

Here's the funny thing about Michigan:

In the last election, our idiot Canadian trash governor Granholm beat DeVos by a comfortable margin. A lot of democrats won house and senate seats.

What also passed was Prop 2, aka the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which banned affirmative action hiring in state government, universities and in contracts with the state. It passed by 59%, so a lot of those voting Democrat also voted FOR the initiative. Both the Detroit News and the Free Press railed against it and DeVos didn't like it, which I think may have cost him the election.

Some sage on McCain's campaign may have noticed that, hence the change of heart in Arizona on Affirmative Action.

Voters in Michigan -- to the dismay of the press -- also voted against same-sex marriage by a large margin.

Agreed. If we can hold the traditional reds and add Michigan, then we have a great start.

At this stage, though, we are not yet holding the traditional reds....hopefully there is an ad campaign about to gear up though highlighting The One’s Euro tour. That will help.

Not even Romney can help McCain in MI. The unions are leaning hard for Obama, and the unions virtually control MI at this point. Romney brings nothing to the table apart from the memory of his dad.

All we need to see is a campaign commercial, media blitz of news shows etc that include Obama buttering Franken or visa versa and the Arrowhead will turn from blue to red, thus cancelling out the Twin City counties....MN will deliver itself to McCain on it’s own.
PS the bad behavior of the moonbats at the convention(if the media shows it) will also help...brave people need to arm themselves with vidyah cameras for that!

Despite the fact we've got a Dim governor and legislature, this is not a liberal state. We still have a substantial Republican registration advantage.

It's a long story, but basically the Dims hit us with a tidal wave of 527 money and took advantage of Republican divisions to pull this off. I'd be very surprised if the Obamessiah takes this state.

BTW, thanks John McCain for CFR and the creation of 527's. But I'll still vote for the putz.

What would make McCain an absolute shoo-in is putting up Hillary as VP, first promising to erase her campaign debt including the $11 million of her own money that she ‘lent’ the campaign. It would put ALL the blue states in play and since Hillary and Juan's policy positions aren't all that far apart, it would be a relationship each could swallow. The day after the inauguration, McCain demands Hillary's resignation and installs Fred Thompson as VP/President-in-Waiting for 2012.

Hey.

I can dream, can't I?

Colorado also has gone red in the past two presidential elections. This is the first time in 8 years that this is a swing state.
If you think everyone here is tree-hugger, you should visit more. Or get a clue, whichever comes first.

Minnesota is. Colorado is all over the place. Michigan is economic liberal outside of taxes, but socially moderate to conservative. It's more "handout" democrat than it is "abortion" democrat. It's more John Dingell than Nancy Pelosi.

With the poor Republican brand here thanks to Bush and gas prices, the democrats should be up 15pts. Obama is a wimp, arrogant, elitist, anti-gun, radical pro-abortion, and isn't manly. Being black is a disadvantage in much of this state. It shouldn't be, but Detroit and its suburbs are a big reason for that among both whites and blacks. There's a reason why Detroit is one of the most segregated areas in the country.

There's a Wilder effect here.
