All Americans can be proud that Roy Benavidez was one of us.
Id never heard the astonishing story of this Vietnam-era Medal of Honor winner, Roy Benavidez, until today. You hear the story - of his almost unbelievable heroism in war, and his spirit of volunteerism in civilian life - and ponder his attitude of service, and you wonder why doesnt Hollywood tell this story?
It sounds like it could be very inspirational. Nothing wrong with being inspired by substance.
Weve just seen an entire week of breathless reporting on what amounted to a whole lotta nuthin but a story like this ... is shrugged off.
I)n 1991 Cindy McCain was visiting Mother Teresas orphanage in Bangladesh when a dying infant was thrust into her hands. The orphanage could not provide the medical care needed to save her life, so Mrs. McCain brought the child home to America with her. The link took me to a page that said “FAIL” and had some weird picture posted there. No story.
Working for me.
Try it again, it is slow to load all the way.
I had the honor of meeting MSG Benavitez back in the early eighties when he was the guest speaker at either a Dining-In, or an NCO Call (I can't remember which).
What I DO remember is that in spite of his remarkable story, he was a humble man. I was then a young, newly promoted SGT E-5, and stood in awe of how someone of his courage could be so humble about it. His speech that night was not about him, or his accomplishments... it was about US, and what we could do to be better leaders of men.
Of course, as I said, I was young and had not yet learned that folks with true accomplishments are usually busy playing them down.
The last time that I thought about MSG Benavitez was during the last presidential election. As I watched John Kerry constantly remind us that he was in Viet Nam, and was a "hero", I thought about my brief moment with a REAL hero a long time ago. No comparison at all. None.
Thanks, MSG Roy. Thanks for your service and sacrifice to our country, and thanks especially for the life lesson on the mark of a MAN, and a true HERO.
R.I.P.
Certainly no disrespect intended... just a "messiah" moment. LOL
